Appears you have to call their 800 #.
The one thing I like about the Geode is that cool slide on cover that comes with it. Right now I'm just carrying the GPS in my pocket/backpack when I go for a walk or a hike. I e-mailed Tactilis about their flip cover and if it was compatible but no reply yet.

flip cover
I have a Flip Cover and it fits with the Magellan GPS just fine.

I've e-mailed Mapopolis, a free mapping software with Points Of Interest, about GPS support and they said it will be in the next release. So whenever that is (hopefully soon), we'll be able to mark our own POI & trade them online just like the Geode people.

Topo mapping program
Has anyone used any of the topo mapping programs? I am interested in one that can work with the Magellan GPS.

So, I crushed under the pressure of desire, and laid down the cash for this sweet little unit. I bought it from Staples, $40 of... with a purchase of $200. I bought some stuff for a buddy too, so once he pays me back, then it will be $110 for it. Check edealfinder.com for coupons.
Anyway... I have noticed that the map for my area is off by a block and a half... the GPS has consistantly said the same location for the past week, so I am assuming it is the map being off. The other gripe I have is I don't know which counties are around me, I moved to this town for grad school, and am not familiar with the counties... I have had to get another map, in order to read the county lines, and decide which maps I want loaded.
This brings me to my "Wouldn't It Be Sweet If" list.
Wouldn't it be sweet if: we could adjust the maps ourselves. That way if we know we are standing on a certain corner, then we can push/offset the whole map to make it right.
Wouldn't it be sweet if: there were a viewer for the maps, so we could choose which ones we want. That way we don't need to know the counties before we travel someplace, and don't over load the maps, leaving precious room for games
.
Wouldn't it be sweet if: there was a program where we could load a ton of the maps, if not all (there are over 300 mgs of maps I think), in the PC. Then we could view them, draw an outline around the parts we want, and hit a "print" button, which made a PDB of the selected area, which the map software could see. That way, if I were driving on a highway to someplace, I could grab all the map info for 2 miles on each side of the highway. I could then know where I was when I pulled off looking for a room for the night.
Wouldn't it be sweet if: all the other requests were filled too... like the ability to leave breadcrumbs in the mapping software, put our own POI's in the mapping software, get more satellite status on the screen of the map (if we wanted), and so on.
Just some thoughts....

Magellan update software
Hi! Stupid question time.
I'm waiting for my Companion to arrive, and I thought I'd download the software update just to be prepared. But I can't unzip it, for some reason. I used my standard unarchiver, Conversions Plus by DataViz, that works with all the other zip files I've encountered, and it gave me an error message saying it doesn't handle that type of file. I also tried Quick View Plus and got nothing but pages of garbage text--it didn't even seem to know it was archived!
Nobody else has mentioned a problem unzipping the file, so I must be doing something really dumb. Can anyone help? I emailed Magellan, but it's a long weekend. . . .
Thanks
Liz
I couldn't get to the site without the link on the magellan cd and when I got there, I had the same problem with unzipping the file. I had to download winzip in order to extract the updater file. Hope this helps

Unzipping software update
Try downloading winzip 8.0. there is a link to this file on the dame page where the update is located. I think the trouble you are having has to do with your zipping program not being able to unzip files zipped with the latest version of winzip.
Goodluck!

Unzipping update
That did it! Thanks!!
It looks like I can save myself a step and just install the 3 updated files and skip the ones on the CD, since it says to delete those from the Visor anyway. I'm glad I got it first. Can't wait for the hardware to arrive--I *would* pick a long weekend to order.

GPS Newbie Impressed
This is my first experience with GPS, and I have to say, I'm impressed. I just got my Magellan GPS Companion from PalmGear, and I took a break in my work because I couldn't wait to try it out. I had already downloaded the software fixes, so I just installed those instead of what's on the CD and the maps for my county and the next one. Plugged the unit in, installed the update to the built-in software, and went outside. After reading some of the posts here, I expected to have to wait for a fix, but I couldn't believe it. I found the status screen, and it acquired 5 or 6 satellites as I watched, in under a minute, and I had a 3-D fix. Then I tried Map Companion, and it put a big red dot on the main road I'm near at the default scale. I figured out how to zoom with the scroll buttons, and again I couldn't believe it. about 5 levels down, it had the name of the little cul de sac I'm on, and it even put me on the right side of the street! I don't have time to read the directions or play with it right now, but I'm hooked. Very impressive. Looks nice with the Prism, too, and has a good heft to it.
I wonder when the nifty accessories will be available? I'm thinking I'll get an Otterbox 3000 for rugged use, but the canvas case would still be nice, and the other accessories are must-haves, too.
How is everyone carrying it around when it's not installed? It would have been nice if Magellan had included a little bag or case of some kind for it. I'm hesitant to just toss it in a purse or something. This is my first module, so I'm not sure how to handle it.
Wait till my friend with the Palm IIIc sees this! Tee hee!!

Good point. I thought it would, because the review says a Handy GPS *should* fit and I didn't know how far the Companion sticks out (I was mostly concerned about the height), but now that I have the Companion, I went back to the Otter page and checked the dimensions. Inside it's 7-7/8 H, 3-1/3 W, and only 1-1/2 deep, so I guess it *won't* fit. Shucks! Back to the drawing board.
I wish Magellan would come out with the hard case they originally mentioned, but I notice that's not even on the dream list anymore.
