-- I just bought a Stowaway! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3729)
gthyb,
Yep, they're not on the website, but they are at the store. I went to a store near me that was supposed to have them in stock. The sales guy told me they weren't there (even though their instock computer said they were, give them the SKU 274337--this'll really get their undies in a bunch). He kept on telling me to order it through the website (even though it's not listed). Finally after about an hour I walked out of the store with mine. They were still in the back unpacked (even though the same sales guy told me that everything is unpacked right away!)
The service was absolutely apalling, I can understand not being able to find something, but it took 2 managers before anyone would even look for it. And then it took a good 45 minutes to actually find them.
It's a great little keyboard though, I'm worried they won't last since it looks kind of delicate, but i haven't heard that much from the palm crowd, so i'm keeping the fingers crossed (and i can still type!)

ps anyone in the dc metro area, the alexandria store has 9 as of 3:00 pm, they'll most likely sell faster now that they are on display. you're welcome
Well after calling my CompUSA for the last few days I finally went over there and looked for myself. Sure enough, they had 5 Stowaways sitting right there. I got one for $99 and canceled my order with targus. If anyone is in the Saint Charles, MO area, there are only 4 left :-)
Time to install my driver!

Ordered mine from Targus online the day they went live (3/31?). It was shipped last Thursday and I got it Wednesday (4/26). Maybe I'm lucky...
Anyway, the keyboard is really great. As for it being fragile, I think it will be ok as long as it doesn't get dropped while open. The multi-action hinges seem to me to be the "weakest link in the chain". Other than that, it's pretty solid, comfortable to type on, and even works fairly well in my lap. I wrote a more detailed review about it in another thread.
By the way, it seems to work WITHOUT needing Beam Receive set to ON.

Another thumbs-up for PalmGear.
One Stowaway in PO Box on Friday. Yay.
The engineering of this thing is luscious, and the feel is sublime. The desktop keyboard suffers in comparison.
One caveat- make sure you pay some attention to ergonomics whereever you set up. Take care of those wrists- you only have 2.
Another concern- am I now going to be the official notetaker at all my meetings now? Maybe for a while.... ;-)
Off to continue wordprocessor evaluation.

Just picked a stowaway up from the San Francisco Compusa. I think they may have close to 100 of them stacked in the back; for some reason they are not on display and itianlly the guy thought they had sold out. Surely enough, he goes in to this back room where he takes one off from this huge pile of em. When i was taking the BART(subway) back home, i could not stop playing with it and people were giving me strange looks. Anyway, it works well though it took a few hotsyncs for it to get installed; very smooth indeed. It seems very sturdy; i droped it form about three feet up on to my hardwood floor opened up, and low and behold it was ok!!!

Just picked one up at the local CompUSA (after encountering way too many inept sales reps, I have to add!). This thing is the coolest "toy" I've owned since the original Optimus Prime! The keys are perfect in spacing and similar to the best in laptops for travel. I did wish the center break could be locked, but I think I can handle it... What a design!!
hows this for irony:
i went to check the status of my order (ordered 4/11), and there was nothing entered in ship date column. then i get a knock at the door (good thing i was home today), and its the ups guy. i know i didnt order any other stuff recently, and sure enough, it had my name on it. i cracked it open, and there She was. mmm.
then i check my email. i get a fresh email from buytargus.com today telling me the unit is backordered. i was cracking up. maybe this will give some of yall hope. hope is a great thing. maybe the best of things, red.
Since they are so inept, you would prolley get away with canceling your order...hehe.
I received this msg this afternoon:
Regretfully, the item(s) listed below from your 4/10/00 order with
BuyTargus.com became back ordered.
Once the product is available, we will ship your product out per your
order instructions.
This just after I emailed them to cancel anyway, so I will wait to pick one up at a retailer once they have credited my card (I assume that will occur with the same swiftness with which I was charged for my order)
Oh well, I'm no worse off than before...

They have them here in Marietta Ga store CompUSA too.. I've had one on order since the day they emailed me about it - April 18th (wassup with taking so long to announce it to some people!?).
I read that many people were finding them in CompUSA, so I strolled over there this morning with the SKU number in hand - they were actually on the counter, underneath the cases and styli.
NICE!! VERY NICE!! I like it alot, I am quite fast with it, and the keyboard is nice and quiet, if only I could find a laptop with a keyboard this quiet.
Contrary to what many people here have said, I found typing on my lap quite easy.. legs crossed even! the keyboard folds the opposite way than I thought, so it actually supports itself when extended. It will bow a little bit in the center, but it does not fold up.
Downside: I wish it were silver with black trim like on thinkoutsides's site.. I thought that looked really nice, sort of a titanium look.
It could use a little more of the rubber pads on the case, I found it to slide a little bit when perched on one of those little half-desks they have at my school (you know, the right handed deals that come halfway in front of the seat).
I promptly cancelled my order with Targus, of course. I actually came out CHEAPER buying it retail than via the manufacturer's web site!
Thanks for posting the availability of these things guys! I've been doing without, now I can have detailed notes again!
:-)
Cancelled my Targus online order and went to CompUSA. They had 5 in stock. W/ the tax it was $3 cheaper than Targus.
Nice, Nice, Very Nice........
Does anyone know the SKU at Staples? Does any other retailer carry the Stowaway besides Staples and CompUsa???
Also, for those of you who already have yours, what Doc editor are you using????
Thanks!
Chilla
sku #274337. Give it a shot!!
If you ordered from Targus, don't give up... I ordered my Stowaway on their web site on 3/31, and I received it last week (4/28). I love it!!
PS: I waited 6 weeks for my Visor, so 4 weeks seems easy in comparison...
I got my Stowaway from CompUSA, and tried to cancel my Targus order, but they said they COULDN'T CANCEL IT!!! They claim that the order has already been sent to some warehouse in PA somewhere (which must not have phones or something!) so they can't cancel it. What a way to run a company!
just got mine today! ordered online april 5th
I got an e-mail this morning saying it shipped yesterday (2nd) and I had two day shipping so it should be here tomorrow. And I checked the ups tracking number they gave me and it says it will be here tomorrow, the box is in minneapolis, so tomorrow they should deliver. I hope so! YAY! BTW: I put in an order when it was first available, so it has been like a month :-(

I just walked into my Local CompUSA and just bought a Stowaway. (Early birthday gift for myself.
) I considered purchasing on-line, but none of the stores had any in stock, so I suffered with the higher price and sales tax.
I must admit the thing is very slick. With my modem, I don't need to take a computer with me when I go on business trips.
Now, if I could just get those Springboard attachments for my brain....

Just got back from a convention with my VDX and Stowaway!
Sat in one large session with my complete setup taking notes. I'm thinking boy is this great and was then surprised over the next 15 minutes to have three women come up and ask what I using. I stopped and showed each of them the coolness of the Stowaway and each in succession said "That's really neat." Never knew my Stowaway would be a Babe-magnet. ;-)
Was thinking myself pretty cool until each one, as they walked off, shook their heads and with a smile said, "Boys and their toys."
Ordered from Targus on 4/4
Creditcard charged on 4/6
Received via UPS on 5/4
The Stowaway is very very nice.. it changes the nature of the Visor, turning it into a device for creating serious documents.
Buy one if you haven't already, you won't regret it.
