This is a pretty funny post considering that VC has already made a dedicated "Visor Edge" forum .

Question Visors

So how many people are actually going to get rid of 300$ platinums or 450$ prisms for this new, and might i add, wretched looking visor?

Posted by digitalhand on 03-11-2001 02:14 AM:

Wink

Maybe I will buy one after m505 launches.

It's alot easier for Platinum owner to get rid of VP for VE. But I have a prism. So it's very difficult for me to choose between color and form factor. And I think it's true for most prism owners.

Umm... NO! I'm a poor college student :-) I'm not getting rid of my platinum! Give me a year and I'll think about it :-) I'll just need someone to sell my platinum to then :-) Or maybe I can give it to my little sister then as a present? Hmmm... yeah... she'll be in high school by then... she might want to use it... yeah... and the moon is made of cheese....

Lightbulb

I had no intention of getting rid of my platinum either. I love it. I don't think a 100$ is a valid amount just for a internal battery, and a sleeker device. I am perfectly happy with my platinum.

Arrow The smart choice

I think the smart choice (unless you have the $$) for Platinum and Prism owners is to wait. I think that the Platium and Prism is still good technically for another year. By then, the Palm OS 5.0 will be which will support higher resolutions and the new ARM processor.

My $0.02

Agreed. And I have to say that this would be true, even if the "Visor Twist" ends up being a color version of the Edge. I just spent $449 for a new PDA in October - I just can't justify spending another $400-$500 on another PDA, even if it is color in a thinner, more compact form factor.

And as for comments regarding the Edge's form factor being "ugly", I think I have to disagree - I think it's actually very attractive. Sleek, yet functional - the comparison to the Star Trek "PADD" is dead on. (I think the sheer simplicity of the design is what sets it apart from the Palm V/Vx/m50X design. I like the detatchable Springboard idea as well - the argument could be made that this is the Visor for people who don't keep SBs in all the time, but still want the functionality when they need it (backup, modems, etc.)

had they gone to 16 meg I'd agree with you; but I suspect that for many of us the springboard slot is always occupied with either the 8(16) meg expansion module or the ThinModem+ or a CF card adapter.

Like someone's tag line asserts ... my visor has more memory than I do
and I'd like to keep it that way

Thumbs up

I actually like the new design - I think it's good looking, the size is right, and I really like the idea of an integrated metal flip screen protector.

That said, I don't plan to switch from my Prism to the Edge any time soon, for three reasons: (1) I love color, and I get it on my Prism (might change if the "twist" is a color Edge); (2) my Prism is all of 3 months old - the paint has barely started to rub off yet (heh heh); and last but not least, (3) I'm a heavy springboard user - I've always got one plugged in, be it my InnoPak, my Minstrel, eyemodule, or GPS.

If you use Springboards all the time, the sled (or whatever they call it) doesn't make much sense - it robs the Edge of it's greatest advantage, it's smaller size. If you don't, I think it's a good choice.

I agree...

I use my 8 MB Expansion module non stop. It's great for things that I want, but didn't have room for when I had my regular Visor. (Bible, etc...) I definately see the reason why Handspring didn't go to 16 MB though: Cost. Most people are fine with only 8 MB (If I didn't keep a copy of the bible, I would be too!) I do think eventually they will increase though. Probably next year, or maybe with the Visor Twist! Too bad they couldn't keep the springboard in though I wonder if the next version of the basic visor will have a thinner form factor with the SB Slot a few years down the road? I sure hope so! These OCDs that are being prototyped seem pretty cool to me! :-)

I will be selling my 3+ month old Prism and get the Edge. I will miss the color..but definitely will not miss the size. Will upgrade yet again when the thinner color unit comes out.

So so far I have owned:
Visor Deluxe (for 8 months)
Visor Platinum (for one week)
Visor Prism (to be sold)
Visor Edge (coming soon)

Posted by Petro on 03-11-2001 03:38 PM:

Wait!

Before you get an Edge, I'd wait and see if the rumors about the visor twist are true If it's a color edge, wait for it!

...in regard to this, i think this would be fine, but what about the money issue? How do you make enough to replace your unit, on average, about every 3 months? In regard to the constant springboard attachment, i to always have one in. Whether it be my soundsgood, or my dictionary, or my backup, i always have one in. So the form factor would be unimportant. But i could stand having the SB thing on the back, if there was like, a belt clip to hold my unit with. But that will be another six months down the road. But to all of you prism and platinum owners that will replace your new unit for a even newer unit, all the power too you.
