-- MemPlug with Flipcover (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15835)

Posted by Vertigo on 06-08-2001 09:59 AM:

I leave my SM MemPlug in my Prism about %95 of the time, so I wanted a cover that would work with the MemPlug. I bought a flipcover in three pieces from Flipcover.com (Cover, Prism Hinge, Adaptor). All I did was cut a small piece out of the adaptor so that the SmartMedia card could be inserted into the MemPlug. It looks professional, like it was designed that way. I will post pictures if anyone is interested.

Is this the ol' style MemPlug or the new and improved one? Does it matter?

I didn't know there were two versions.
I'm fairly sure it's the 'old' one. I got it about a month after it was intially released. I'll post pictures shortly.

Here it is. I scanned it in since my Eyemodule pictures weren't showing enough detail. It's a simple modification. Just cut a bit away from one side.

Question

hey!! You mean you cut out a piece of SmartMedia??!!

ooOps~~

Posted by Vertigo on 06-11-2001 02:44 PM:

No, I'm no where near that foolhardy.
I cut a small piece of plastic from the Flipcover adaptor.

There is someone on the board who did cut his SmartMedia card. It seems all the working materials are in the gold area. The rest of the card is only plastic, I would assume, to make handling it easier.

I am concidering doing the same thing, but have not worked up the nerve yet.

I seem to think that the small black retangle that is recessed from the outside edges is the actual memory chip (opposite side of the gold contacts). If you are really thinking about cutting the card then you should probably stay away from that area as well.

In the course of beta testing the MemPlug and PiDirect(and so repeatedly taking it in and out of the module to and to quickly load programs from a reader), my 32meg SMcard has begun to show some signs of plastic fatigue (the black plastic is beginning to turn white on one side right where it meets the MemPlug). I don't know whether that would have occurred had I not been doing so much manipulation of it. And it still looks like it has plenty of life left to it.

But anyway, the point is, if it breaks or part of it breaks, it will in all likelihood break right along that line. Why cut or snap it off now, why not just wait and see?

Either way, how would you to get the card out of the module (or an external reader) if the whole end surface is cut or breaks off?

Scotch tape folded onto itself and the SM card would work for taking it out. But for putting it in... Hmm. Maybe file down one of those HS plastic stylus swizzle sticks into a SM card pusher?
