-- Prism case crack (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14412)

Red face

I have heard of other Prism users mention this but was wondering how many others have this same problem.

I have my Visor Prism. (luv it). I have noticed a while back a small hair line crack in the tip top left side of the Prism. At first it worried me but I read of others having the same crack and for some reason this releaved my worring.
Today I noticed another one in the same area. Now I am getting worried. I like my prism a lot. I cannot send it in for repair cause I had it upgraded to 16meg. I really didn't want to mess around with getting a new one and swapping the guts and taking it back. (Just seems dishonest).

I have also noticed on occasion the touchscreen stops working. I have to pwr off and on (NOT RESET) to get it working again and it is fine.

Any Ideas?

My prism was cracking pretty good. It didn't affect functionality of it at all, but I did send it in when I got my edge so my wife could use a new one.

Exclamation

Is this right? Only one other reader here has seen the crack I am talking about?

The 'cracks' I've seen on mine are all mold flashing. Any that aren't appear to be scratches in the paint, and not really cracks. I haven't taken my unit apart to really verify this, though.

Since I can't see your visor in person, I won't try to tell you that you don't have cracks in yours-- you very well might. However, I do have a similar crack-like line on the top of the unit (as in, the the side that has the groove for the snap-on cover to fit in place). It goes from the left edge of the springboard slot (edge opposite the stylus side) directly to the middle seam where the front and back case pieces join.

This line HAS gotten worse looking as wear-and-tear on my visor continued-- this is due to the fact that the case is painted, and the paint has tended to rub away from the flashing seam.

A similar flashing seam appears going from the bottom of the cutout for the stylus slot on the right of the unit, again toward the middle seam.

Hope this helps!

My prism has the same two features that mpkirby describes. They don't affect my use of the unit in any way -- strictly asthetic. Some paint is rubbing off too, which I also don't care about. I just want to burn FAFileMover into my flash rom!

OrionNE: Another reader posted something a few weeks back to the effect that the springboard crack seemed more pronounced after he had the 16MB upgrade performed. That upgrade may involve stacking two memory chips and ultimately putting a bit of stress on the housing near the SB slot. If it's not a big inconvenience, I wouldn't worry about it two much. If you think it may affect your use of the unit, talk to whoever performed the upgrade to get their thoughts on this.

Thumbs up

Thanks for responding. I took my Prism apart to check and one of the cracks seem to be stress crack from me insering and removing springboards. It bug's me but is not hurting the functional part of my Prism. Also while I was in poking around I saw that I have one 16meg memory chip. mine is not stacked. This means that it is prolly the springboards. The HandSpring modem I have is a tight fit.

Since I know someone will ask. While I was looking at the memory chip I noticed that the manufacture and part numbers had been scratched out. They are un-readable. Tony is a smart cookie.

I haven't taken my Prism, upgraded by Tony, apart to check if I have one 16MB memory or two x 8MB yet. I do have a little crack on bottom left of Prism which I'm pretty sure wasn't there before Tony upgraded it. It's not a big deal for me but it does concern me that the cases appear "to crack so easily".

Regarding the 16MB memory chips, PDA Concept (in Singapore) is doing these 16MB upgrades too and had got the 16MB chips in about a week ago. People are asking PDA Concept if it'll be possible to put 2 x 16MB chips or have a 16MB chip plus an 8MB chip in the Prism... I wonder if this is something that Tony is looking into too. No Palm device can ever have too much speed or too much memory

If I recall correctly, the 33Mhz Dragonball VZ only supports up to 16MB of RAM. The Dragonball EZ only support up to 8MB.
