Got a replacement Prism today, works great! Even with a WriteRight screen cover applied. I later applied the HS Extension patch for Graffiti and I'm not sure I notice a whole lot of difference, but digitizer accuracy is severly improved over the old unit, in any case.
Prism Replacement
I have received my Prism replacement. First off, I was told it would ship on Wednesday. I got it on Wednesday. Not bad that it was ahead of schedule, but why don't they know this information better when I was told this on Monday! Then, the graffiti problem on my replacement (which I was told they would test before sending it out the door) was horrible. It is 1,000 times worse than my original! It honestly took me five minutes just to get through the initial syncronization screens. Why can't Handspring get their products right, before they go out the door? Why don't they test when they promise they will? There was also 2 AAA batteries in the box. The Prism is recharchable. All this makes me think that the staff doing the RMA's don't have a clue. Also, I received the same day that a fix was put up on their website. Did they really not know a fix was coming?

I would have expected that Handspring would not humiliate itself by sending out a replacement machine that they promised would be defect free, and then it have the defect! Why send it out? Just to piss off the customer? What blows me away is that the patch (once you extract it) is dated the 7th. That would have been plenty of time for them to have applied it before sending it out this week. More than that, I would like to have a machine that has the patch applied in ROM. I don't see why I should have to use RAM space for their flawed design, when the patch could be properly integrated in the machine. It's just all around poor customer service.

Okay, perhaps I've seemed a tad angry. I've just been watching, waiting, and rooting for a long time for Handspring to come out with a color PDA. It was disappointing to get one with a defect, and even more disappointing to get a replacement with the same defect, even worse. They should have not shipped it that way.
All in all though, aside from my lowered expectations for Handspring's customer support, I'm excited by the Prism and won't give it up. While I may a wait a few weeks once the Visorphone is released (to watch for defects), I intend to get one of those also.

H1 OS Update
Just thought I'd put in my two cents. I thought the Graffiti was a bit stodgy myself. So, I found an OS update (dated 11/13/00) on the HS Customer Service web page that mentions improved Graffiti. I just installed it and found the Graffiti recognition to be just like my old Palm! I was already thrilled with my new Prism, but now I'm very stoked. Good on 'ya HandSpring!

Yep, I found the patch and it works like a charm. I'm just bothered over the fact that they sent out a replacement that has the same defect. Why send it out? This makes me worry about Handspring's customer service. I don't doubt that I will be buying PDA's of some sort or another for the rest of my life. My lifelong decision to stick with a brand has as much to do with customer service as it does to do with customer service. Handspring is not showing competency here yet.
