Called the order line tonight to ask about the modem (I have one on order already). I ask when it would be available and the lady said "late this month".

Unhappy

My mother claims she ordered a Handspring modem for me from their website before Christmas. (She is my mom, so I have to believe her, and yes she is computer literate. Who do you think got the award for best Christmas presents ever by giving my brother and I each a Visor Deluxe, an 8 mb flash memory expansion module, back-up module, a Handspring leather case, and a 5 pack of handspring styli?) But she has yet to recieve the modem. When I go to the Handspring site, there is no new information as to when they will be shipping, or even a "Buy it" icon. Although I don't know exactly how this will improve my life, I can't wait to get it. Is there anymore definitive information when I can expect the modems to ship? I have tried to be patient, but the anticipation is killing me. (Ok, I know many of you would be envious that the Handheld itself had arrived. I can only imagine your pain.)

Please, can anyone tell me something other than "Later this month?" It is the 22nd, after all.

Its February already. Handspring, where are you?

PFC,

I'm getting conflicting reports.

Emailed someone high up in Handsrping. Was told that they hoped to ship all the back ordered modems by mid february. I would think to do that that have to start shipping soon but ...

Called the order line, on Feb 01 and was told they didn't have a ship date yet.

Weird thing is the guy also gave me an update on innogears modem. It ain't shipping either.

Felipe,

Thanks for indulging my whining, and for the info.

Thumbs up

Got mine today... ordered 11/19/1999. I was shocked and amazed. Works great so far.

REALLY??? NO WAY!

What have you been using it for?

How does it work?

What can you do with it?

What apps have you gotten for it?

How big is it? What kind of case are you using it with?

To answer the PFC:

I use it to do what I did on my Palm V (with modem, of course) -

AvantGo - to retrieve content from home without having to wait for Windows to boot (for offline browsing after hanging up)

MultiMail - read & send email

PalmTelnet - access the Unix box at work

ProxiWeb - online browsing (can be done with AvantGo, but seems slower to me)

Approx size: 2.5" tall, 2" wide, 1" thick

To answer how it works... well, you plug it in, then set up some sort of network connection (under 'Preferences','Network') which is roughly analogous to 'Dial-Up Networking' in Windows. Stuff's in the manual for the modem, actually.

Question

Can I throw in a question here regarding handheld modems?

When I travel overseas, I can dial AOL's access number in, say, Malaysia, and easily check email via my laptop. Would it be just as easy with a handheld modem??? How would it work exactly ... traveling overseas and all???

Here we go again.

Two people who ordered in november got their modems.

At least they are shipping.

Amen, At last someone has a springboard modem. My day has been made. Of course I hope mine will arrive soon since I placed my order in August.

Say bye-bye to my notebook that I typically take everywhere so I can hotsync.

Again, amen.

is it possible to use the network setup on your visor and the built in mail program to send email or does it DEFINATELY need a program like multimail??

In other words, did Handspring design things so that you can sync your email on your visor through a modem straight from your ISP?

it seems redundant to have the mail program on your visor AND a third party program like multimail when using the modem.

Cool

Received my modem yesterday(2/9/00) but haven't had a chance to try it out yet. I'll keep you posted.

I don't have a modem module, but technicly speaking ANY modem can do that. Just because it's a small modem that goes on the springboard dosn't change its core funtion as a modem. Checking and sending email from straight from the ISP is one of the selling points for the module.
