What a shame

I hate to see any company shut its doors! behind every door that shuts, there are really lost dreams, hurt employees, families and friends. I wish the best to all those who where a part of Yada Yada

I enjoyed using Yada Yada over the past year. I had only good experiences with it. I was so impressed earlier this year that I could get on the network in Los Angeles roaming (I live in Houston) without any problem.

I wonder if someone would buy the company to continue or expand the service.

I loved YadaYada's service, it was normally always fast and reliable, especially in Philadelphia. It made my bus journey home so much better, being able to read news and be on AIM.
It was also an amazing price with a free modem and only $35 a month if you pre-paid.

YadaYada brought new live to my visor Deluxe, and was tieing me to the visor platform. Now that the service is no more, I am free to consider the PocketPC platform next time I upgrade.

However, I am looking to sign up with Go-America, they are more expensive at $45 a month. Does anyone know how reliable Go-America is??

I, too, enjoyed the YadaYada service for the last year! I never had any problems using it here in Minneapolis or Chicago and tech support was decent.
I recently cancelled the service because I now use a wired modem (Xircom SpringPort) to connect.

As stated in a previous post, I cancelled my YY Service after 12 months of great service. I recently got the Visor Phone and am now using it for wireless access.

The Visor Phone is a great alternative to the YY although it's not unlimited access. I didn't use the YY that much anyway. I also like using it as a telephone. Now I carry one less device.

I'm using the Voicestream service which gives me 500 nationwide minutes and unlimited weekends for only $40/month. I'm saving $360/year with this setup because I cut my cell phone ($35/month) and YY ($40/month).

The Visorphone is now free with activation, and I recommend this as an alternative to the YY service. You do need to have a dialup ISP....luckily I use the one from my work.

Well, I'm glad you folks enjoyed YadaYada. My experience was less positive. When it worked I liked it, but it frequently didn't work.

I originally had a bad Minstrel, although they were good enough to provide me with a new one. I also found their reliability to be spotty. My year contract was up about now and I was going to cancel the service - in fact, my email to that effect crossed in the ether with their email pulling the plug.

I've switched to using a cable to my Motorola StarTac cell phone, service from Verizon. It seems more reliable, plus I get to use my springport slot for other things. It's not unlimited service like YadaYada, but on reflection I decided that doesn't matter. First, I don't use it that much - I have at T-1 line at work and Broadband (knock on wood) at home, so I only use it on the road.

Second, and more important, for the $40 a month I spent on YadaYada, I can buy a lot more additional cell time minutes - more than I would realistically use.

But all that said, I do feel bad for the folks who worked there. It's a tough time to be looking for a new job.

The modem

Well, when I had YadaYada service, which was about for 2 months a month after they had that christmas special? Man that was a while ago. It hardly worked even with a RF enhanced visor deluxe. I still have the modem though. Was wondering, is it possible to use it with att's, verizon's, go-america or whoever's service? I wouldn't mind paying $30 a month for verizon, if it would work.

deluxe connecting to a cell phone

Does anybody know a good site to find a data cable to connect a cell phone to a visor deluxe, and also which phones work.
It would make sense to connect, if I can, with all my free minutes though my cell phone.

If I wasn't contracted to AT&T until June I would, get a visor phone.

The Treo is looking more and more attractive, with wireless companies stopping service.

Cables

Try www.gomadic.com or markspace's site. Cables4PDAs also used to make them, I don't know if they are still around.

I got mine from Gomadic (for my Startac), works great.

Also, check out www.thesupplynet.com. That's where I got my cable and easy setup instructions for my SprintPCS Sanyo phone

Thanks for the links guys, but looks like I am on completely the wrong network to connect my visor to my cell. I am on AT&T, which is great for the free PocketNet service, but most of the cables I looked at said Cingular only. Seems they are all set up for GSM. My only option is to upgrade my AT&T phone and get my laptop connected, or I could bug my local Starbucks to go wireless :-)

But with news of a possible BeIA influenced 32bit ARM powered Palm OS coming out next year, I think I will save my pennies for a new PDA next spring.

a success nonetheless

It's been a fun ride. Even after their first "reorganization" earlier this year. I was pulling for them til the end. Good product, good concept, good people, just a series of unfortunate events beyond their control. We could all offer our "what if's" If only ______ then maybe they would have pulled through. But if they had not conducted their business as they had, then they may not have lasted as long as they did. The truth of the matter is, that even though YY is now history, they go in my history book as a success. The only way to fail, is to not try at all. They tried as best they could. When things looked bad, they regrouped and tried again. Kudo's to all the YY gang and best of luck in your future ventures. Your fighting spirit will assure your success wherever you go.
