Post Cracks in plastic edge on Edge

Have any Edge owners experienced cracks around the screws on the plastic edge that goes around the Edge? I just noticed that I have cracks around four of the screws that weren't there when I got my Edge about a month or so ago. I loosened up the screws just a bit to relieve some of the pressure - but I don't know if that will stop the cracking.

I am tempted to call Handspring for a replacement, but I have had very good luck with my Edge and I don't want to risk getting a bad replacement.

Any suggestions?

Holy lord. Another Edge problem? With HS charging for warranty replacements & your edge working fine otherwise, I'd leave well enough alone--unless you can return it and get something else!

Well, I have thought about a few shifty ways to get my hands on a new Edge, but I won't get into that here. Seeing that I have about 10 1/2 months left on my so-called warranty, I may just wait to see if the cracks get any bigger. Frankly, the thought of getting replacement Edge from Handspring scares the hell out of me. I know how many "fatal exception" returns they have on their hands. I would rather not adopt someone else's problem.

I say dont do it untill i gets really bad. I hope it wont.

If you call and they dont replace it. you get charged $19.99???

I emailed HS just last week about a simple little problem with my edge. they emaile me "Thank you for contacting Handspring.
Please contact our Customer Care team at 1-888-565-9393 for further information concerning this matter. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you"

dont take a chance of getting an edge that doesnt work, when yours is almost perfect.

I wish you good luck!!

Well, I called HS customer support and they are sending a replacement. I am going to use it for the two weeks before I have to send one back to them, and see if I have any problems. If I notice anything weird at all, I am going to send the replacement back to them and go another route. I am very skeptical about this - I just know I am going to get a dud.

When the rep told me I had to pay either $25 for them to ship the replacement, or mail my Edge to them first at my cost, I pitched a total fit. Needless to say, I got my way and my replacement is on it's way for no charge.

I looked at the cracks today and it looks like they have gotten bigger. The last thing I need is to have the damn thing fall apart. We'll see how it goes.

Arrow Tight might be better--

I suspect that the cracks may be from shifting and torsional pressures when the screws are loose. The Edge has exhibited (in some people's experience) a tenedency to have these screws loosen. I would suspect you would be better off with them snugged down. Of course, once the cracks appear -- I don't know if tightening would help or hinder.

Yea, I posted the same question back in Sept.

I did get the utit replaced but I don't recomend it unless there is something more wrong with it. Since I got it replaced I have gone through 3 other units, though they did not seem to have these cracks they all seemed like they were of lower quality.

My friends unit also had these cracks, a few weeks ago he dropped his unit and it broke the screen and casing, he took the Edge appart and we had a look inside, we discovered that the cracks go only slightly under the surface and could not have posed any threat to the Edge.

If you have a silver Edge try shining a light where the cracks are, then you can see how deep they really go.

Thanks for the great information, ice. I am going to have a look with a flashlight and see if they appear to be only surface cracks.

At this point I don't think that I will keep the replacement unless I can tell for sure that it is brand new (if I can tell). I remember reading old threads about there being colored dots by the serial number which would indicate whether the unit is new or a refurb. As I posted above, I don't want HS to send me somebody else's reject because I don't want to open myself up to a whole new realm of problems. Chances are, however, that I will be receiving exactly that.
