Microphone Questions

1. Is it possible to activate the microphone using a hack or something without using a springboard?

2. If the answer to the above is no then why did they put the microphone there in the first place?

1) no, it's only physical connection is to the Springboard slot

2) for use with Springboards that enable and utilize it
