I use Write Rights. I like them. I tend to neglect cleaning my screen and often use my visor in dirty environments. Microscopic metal filings make short work of a screen. I also use a Visorphone and the textured screen makes cheek prints invisible.

I just had a Prism relplaced. I used a protector on it from day one
and it was about 2 weeks shy of being one year old. When I got the
new one, I decided to not put one on to see how fast the screen would
scratch up. I took 2 weeks. I just put one on the new unit tonight.
I was using the Pilot Pentopia 1+1 pen. It got something on it and
scratched the grafitti area. I have scratch marks where I tap the
deck and drawn cards in solitare. So, yes we do need screen protectors.

how hard do you guys press with your stylus???

i've had my platinum since january and i'm a pretty heavy user (replace NiMH batteries about once a week). i don't use a screen protector. i tried it once and hated it as it reduced sensitivity (yes, i'm still talking about the screen protectors here).

anyway, after 10 months of use, i only have a few mild scratches on the screen, and they are barely visible.

Up until a week or so ago, I was not using any screen protector except for tape or something similar on the Grafitti area (a very mild haze had formed there and I was trying to prevent it.) My usage is pretty heavy, and I wipe the screen often, and clean/polish it weekly.

Suddenly, while doing a routine cleaning and polish, I noticed some significant scrastches- that is, visible and just barely felt by the stylus, and a couple small 'nicks' or tiny pits.

I have no idea where they came from- a touch of grit that I did not wipe off? Family members playing games?

I tried buffing them out- no dice. Grr!

I had already tried the home-made vinyl and transparency film tricks and was not real happy with either, and I cannot stand the Fellowes WriteRIGHT for the Visor (too fuzzy!).

I ordered a couple other versions mentioned elsewhere in this and similar threads- I'll let you know what I find.

It has actually been 4 weeks and I was very careful of the pressure
I put on the screen. Like I said, I use it constantly at work, either
looking up part numbers, playing games on break or adding info to a
spreadsheet. I use the homemade vinyl kind of protectors. I would
rather look thru a few small bubbles than scratches.

For cleaning I use eyeglass cleaner and lense tissues, or a 'gel spray' formulated for monitors (Radio Shack).

For polishing, I use RainX. It leaves the screen wonderfully slick. There is a minor trick to using RainX or other silicones- use a small drop and gently 'buff' it in- at first it will bead up, but then it will form a film. Let the film dry, then buff off.

I have tried a couple of the screen protectors mentioned here, and want to share my results.

www.PDAScreenProtectors.com are small sheets of Mylar that slip between the frame and screen instead of using any kind of adhesive. Good instructions, and they include a cleaning cloth.

I found them easy to install, but very easy to scratch. My Pentiopia Chameleon Stylus had a very small burr that ripped up the first one I tried pretty bad. Polishing the stylus and film seems ot have helped a lot. These are crystal clear, and tend to glare a bit more than the naked screen. Scratches on the screen were easily visible through the protector, although I could not feel them any more.

www.Brando.com.hk protectors come 1 to a package and claim to be reuseable, washable, etc. They are easy to put on and reposition as needed- although small dust specks can make big air bubbles, so keep the area very clean. They are very lightly 'sanded' which reduces glare, but they are still very transparent. Scratches on the screen seem to fade or vanish under this protector.

This protector feels very good under the stylus- almost paper-like under a nice pencil. A stylus with enough of a burr to scratch the Mylar sheets did not seem to bother the Brando sheet at all. The Brando sheet does come off easily enough, and readheres nicely. You can wash it, but be careful of lint and dust.

So far, I think the Brando screen protector will be the one to stay on my Visor.

I've been using one since Day 1 of getting my Visor Deluxe...

I recently changed my protector and it had no scratches on the following day. At school, a few friends were playing Billiard on it and there was still no scratches. I continued writing my mini-ebook on it using graffiti and still no scratches.

UNTIL, some freaking bastard guy played with my Deluxe... left so many marks on it because he pressed sooo hard with my stylus until the spring in the pen (City Stylus) went in fully.

F*** HIM man. I was so F***ed up that day... What if I wasn't using a screen protector? Oh man, I think I would have went home with a scratched screen and a broken stylus...

So my conclusion is: Don't lend your PDA to a guy whom you HATE a lot.

Well, at least I hate that guy. Lame faggot.

I still love my Visor Prism

I used a Pilot Pro for 2 yrs (1 scratch on the grafitti area) , a Visor plat for six mos (same) , and now a 505 (none). I give the stylus a quick wipe on my shirt before use to clear any granular crud that may be there. I've done it so long it is like a reflex. Its a habit that has served me well, judging from the other posts here.

Someone on the Brighthand board suggested a strip of removable Scotch tape (purple box) across the silkscreen area as inexpensive protection. Since there was no cost involved (I had some), I tried a strip on my 505. Who says there's no such thing as a free lunch? This works great, gives a very authentic paper feel, and lasts at least three months! I'm using the same piece right now.

Assuming that this strip lasts at least 5 mos that would be 3" of tape / a 50' roll of tape * 5 mos = about 84 years of Graffiti protection. Not bad for $2.17.

I had tried the tape trick (Scotch 'purple box' removeable style, although I also got good results from the normal clear (not frosted' tapes- the frosted style showed wear and felt funny pretty quickly.

The problem I have with this trick is the unexpected. As I said earlier, someone, somewhere, somewhen, somehow scratched my screen- although I had not done so in several months.

My advice is that the tape trick is a good one IF you a.) never loan out your PDA, b.) take nearly obsessive care to prevent dust and burrs, c.) clean the screen before each use, d.) never use the PDA in a dusty or 'unclean' environent, e.) generally never need to worry about that 'one time' that leaves permanent scars.

Otherwise- I am re-convinced of the need of SOMETHING to provide additional insurance.

A screen protector should be mandatory. These screens scratch very easily.

In 1988 a manufacture made this statement about their LCD's.

the attention away from the problem at hand. I
have now changed the logo to a realistic size.
This should not detour you or anyone else from

Screen Protectors are a needed protection. When
you use a Electronic Instrument the way the
Instrument was designed to be used.You
inadvertently destroy the viewing screen. A
acknowledgeable solution has been on the market
for 13 years now.

To date the Industry has not help the consumer.
The Industry should allow this product to be
included at the time of purchase?

I know of one manufacture that adds a screen
protector Fujitsu. Congratulations is in
order for Fujitsu. They at least recognize the
consumer will need such a product.
