Foo...no offense taken...(they ARE only computers, after all...) I use PCs and Macs (and, a *bit* of linux) all the time. I still prefer my Mac. It is just better designed, IMHO.

James: Nice comparison. I'm guessing that the Vaio may not have an ethernet card built-in, though I would guess that it should have USB ports and possibly a Firewire port (considering all of Sony's cameras are Firewire equiped). Don't forget to compare screen sizes.

Both are cool machines, though (which should be expected considering that Sony and Apple are giants in the design world).

I'm internetless right now so it's going to take a while to jump in on great arguments like this ! I made the mistake of discontinuing service with my dial-up internet connection before calling to setup an appointment with my cable internet provider. Now I'm SOL until the 17th . It's a pisser because I can read the posts at the library, but I don't dare respond and leave the cookies that translate into my user name and password on the public computer. Who know what crazy thing someone might post under my name !

IMHO it's the feverish anticipation and loyal following that says more than anything about the Mac. Isn't that what owning a computer should be? Don't you feel the same when you're playing (ok. working) with your visor? I honestly can't say why I jumped on the Mac. For the money I spent I could have had a Microsoft funded pile of beige plastic and silicon with better specs than those on my iMac. Thank the heavens I didn't. The specs don't translate into satisfaction. My mac is beautiful, hard working, fast, and easy - good qualities in a woman as well (except maybe the easy part). I don't know how Apple boxes loyalty and pride with their products, but I'm as attached to my mac as I am my dog. And this from someone who used to kick his computer daily because using it was such a pain the neck (I took it to the middle of a field and shot it with my .243 when I got the iMac. That was better than an hour at a massage therapist!). I get tension headaches when I come over to my mother's house to post on VC because I know I'm going to have to deal with a computer instead of my Mac. It's a good thing VC takes my stress away. Usually.

Not surprisingly he is of the opinion that the Mac Powerbook blows the Vaio out of the water, but he has owned both and his comparisons are interesting.

As my first Mac was a powerMac 6100/66 DOS Compatible w/16mb RAM, 500mbHD, FD & CD, I've got my eye on the high-end G4.

How will I pay for it? Like I did the last one: win the progressive on a quarter slot.

Seriously, I'll have to sell some stock. 100 shares should give me twice as much as I'm gonna need for incidentals (like a screen, scroll-wheel mouse, digitizer, PhotoShop, Office, and F/A-18 Hornet Korea).

From MacNN's PowerBook G4 Special Report:

"Apple engineers insist that the PowerBook G4 does indeed run for five hours off the battery under real-world use. In fact, some report getting as much as five and a half or six hours of usage on a single charge. As with other PowerBooks, using the DVD drive on the PowerBook G4 will approximately halve battery life (assuming the drive is always in use, as when watching a DVD). "

This computer just keeps looking better and better. There were some other interesting things noted in the article if you follow the link.

One of the best technical sites is http://www.xlr8yourmac.com, http://www.macnn.com usually covers various software updates/releases and is a pretty good general info site and http://www.macgamer.com is great for games .

I found through one of those sites the schematic for the PowerBook. It's been a while since I've used a Mac, so is the Delete key DELETE or Backspace? Can I hold shift and it switches between the two?

I also like how holding the Fn key changes the arrow keys (p56). I haven't found a PC keyboard that I liked because of the arbitrary location of the PageUp/Down and Home/End keys.

Oh, BTW, here's something funny: When I used to support Macs, I never knew that holding in Ctrl and clicking did something different. Years later I read about that "feature." I guess you really only need one mouse button!

The delete key is the backspace key. I'm not sure if it has a key that acts like the PC delete key, but judging from the pictures it doesn't.

The only time I would like to have a two button mouse is when playing certain games (Deus Ex), other than that one button works perfectly.

Ahh, silly boy, they do, it's called Virtual PC. But since OS X is based on Linux there is a program that lets you run any linux X-App on a Mac. I for get the name but it's made by tennon, so WINE should work.

Well, technically no, it's based on darwin, which is based of the BSD kernal, which is a version of UNIX which is what LINUX is based on, so it really dosen't matter. But with the program I mentioned you can use X-Apps(apps that need X-Windows to run)

Well...yes, Darwin is the name that Apple has given the "modified" BSD microkernel. But its still BSD at the core.

Now, I'm trying to be technical here, but if I don't clear this up..the Linux users will jump on you FAST!!! Technically, Linux is NOT based on UNIX. Its based on a UNIX clone called Posix. So Linux is not a variant of Unix...its a Unix-like OS.

I think the argument is one of semantics, but I do have to agree with Foo, saying OS-X is based on Linux is going to upset a lot of Linux people. For a while, Apple was taking a lot of heat for NOT using Linux as the core to Mac-OSX. Apple has several legitimate reasons for NOT basing OSX on Linux and that pretty much hushed the critics.

I'm not aware of OS X running native Unix apps, but I could be wrong, as I am by no means a Unix guru.

And I would probably argue that Virtual PC is a MUCH more capable OS emulator than anything available on Linux at this time.
