Memory stick and PS2

I was just thinking that the PS2 is probably one of the few new sony machines WITHOUT the memorystick technology.

I wonder why, the PS2 has memory cards, why did they not use Memorystick instead and maybe have a 1 legacy port?

Makes no sense to me to switch your whole product line except for one....

Any body have some nice (conspiricy) theories?

Maybe the price point of these things? I've seen memeory cards pretty cheap, if they're even compatible from the PS1 to PS2, but the last time I looked at a memory stick, it was expensive ($30-8MB, may be lower now) Just speculation.

That is a good point. The MemoryCards for the Playstation are much cheaper than MemorySticks. Though, Sony could have added an MS slot for those of us who already use them.

It is kind of odd now that you mention it. I had never really thought about it before, but you would think MS would be there. It is on everything else the sell.

**As an update, it is not totally true that Sony only uses MemoryStick. Some of there DigitalCameras write to CD and some write to FloppyDisk. However, most products now come with a MS Slot included. Not that I am complaining, I actually like the MS.**

Um, no. When you say "Playstation" I assume you are refering to PS1 - however since that is irrelevant to the discussion about PS2 memory cards I will address it as refering to PS2.

A PS2 memory card (holds 8megs) is currently $34.99.

An 8 mb memory stick is currently $24.99.

PS1 memory cards do NOT word for PS2 games. You can use PS1 memory cards on a PS2, but ONLY for PS1 games that you are using on the PS2. A typical PS2 save game is bigger than the entire memory of a PS1 memory card.

It really would have been nice if PS2 supported memory sticks. It would be SO much cheaper to buy 1 16mb memory stick for $34.95 than to buy 2 PS2 memory cards for $70.

Keep in mind that the prices I quoted are all suggested retail prices. A 16mb memory stick can be bought for about $25 or less online whereas the price for a PS2 memory card is stable in all channels.

Well, there goes my theory. I was under the impression that all Sony MemoryCards would work with the PS2 and PS2 games. I did not realize the issues you addressed. Thanks for pointing this out to me, as I am about to get a PS2, and had no idea I needed new MemoryCards.

What a bummer! Now I really would like a MS Slot...

Before PS2 came out there were rumors of a MemoryStick adapter, haven't heard anything since.

It would be neat if they came out with Palm Desktop when the PS2 hard drive is released.

That could be quite possible. Looking at my PS2 I see two USB ports and an iLink port (Firewire). At 2001 PC expo Sony had a demo of one of their digital cameras that connected to the PS2 and you can apply the image to a character in the game.

Man, it would be cool to be able to connect my clie to my PS2.

BTW - Get Metal Gear Solid 2, it is awesome

I got a PS2 this weekend with the GT3 Bundle. GT3 is awesome. I am getting MGS2 for Christmas. My wife already bought it, she just want let me play it until then.

After paying $35.00 for an 8MB MemoryCard, I do wish it had a MemoryStick Slot.
