Hi,

At first is was great, now it is crashing my visor evertime I try to connect to my ISP (Mindspring).

It worked fine for the first two weeks NOw I have done many soft resets and a few hard ones.

I'll be calling them in the AM. I don't have the box it cam in I hope they don't give me any problem returning it. If so I will be back to flame there ***.

Cool It's working now!

OK here what I think is the problem...

It started to crash about two weeks after I got it. Well I just changed the batteries and WOW it's back. Maybe they should fix the low power warning.

I still like it So I'll keep it.

Bye

Yes, I like ProxiWeb. It supports graphics and does not make you scroll all the way right/left to read.

Exclamation Avoiding hard resets and xircom springport modem

I bought the xircom modem and it worked fine, but then things started crashing with an empty dialog box. Soft resets would fix it, but eventually it would crash so hard that hard resets were necessary.

Following the advice on this forum, I changed the batteries on the modem and now all seems well again.

Isn't this modem supposed to warn you when the batts get low? Maybe that's what was supposed to appear in the rest of the blank dialog box...

Anyway, if you know what to watch for I suppose it's not too much of a problem. i.e. if your xircom modem crashes your visor go buy some batteries...

Unhappy Connection fails

Hi, I purchased the Xircom modem last week in NYC. Returning to Switzerland and trying to launch it for the first time, all seemed to be easy (automatically choosing German welcome text etc.). Problem then: the cable of Xircom doesn't fit into Swiss (and I suppose all European) telephone plugs. So I tried with my normal telephone and then my normal modem cable, which I could plug into the Xircom. But both ways didn't work, that is: the connection failed. No lamps on. "GlobalAccess"?
Anybody who could help me? Thanks in advance!!! Best, Rolly

I had the "blank dialog box of death" reset problem too, like jabraham, although I never had to do a hard reset (thank god). Replacing the batteries seemed to do the trick for me too. It seems their low battery warning doesn't work.

The lesson, I guess - if your visor starts locking up with the Springport inserted, just go ahead and replace the batteries right away.

Anyone else tried the Xircom Springport56 modem with a Visor Prism yet?

I initially had a problem where the modem was causing the Prism's Charge light to blink, and the batteries drained very quickly. However, I just put in a new set of batteries and everything's working as expected. Odd.

I remember someone mentioning in passing that the xircom can use rechargeable batteries from a cellphone. (a motorola startac if I remember correctly) is this true, or is alzimers kicking in early for me?

Also, if true how would one charge the batteries (assuming that I don't have a startac charger already)

Unhappy

Well, I just took possesion of a SpringPort (ordered from Egghead, which delivered in two days to me in Louisville, KY), and I've been tearing my hair out in frustration for most of the day over trying to download email. I'm using this on a new Visor Platinum.

I'm able to connect with my ISP (via what I think are standard POP3 settings), it handshakes fine, goes through the "Checking Messages" routine with the status bar showing the number of waiting messages (say, 30) -- but as soon as it moves to "Getting Messages," the entire system hangs, won't respond to screen taps, and finally issues a timeout error messages. I've tried every combination of settings that I can think of, but nothing results in messages actually being downloaded into the Visor.

My batteries are fresh, but the version of Multimail SE installed is only 1.0. Could this be a software issue, something with my POP3 configuration I'm not aware of, or simply a bad modem which needs to be swapped out?

BTW, how do you change parity settings on the Xircom? I'm going to need to call into an office machine that requires Even parity, and I can't seem to find the right submenu for this. It _does_ exist, doesn't it?

many thanks in advance...

My experience using the Xircom - it's a touchy little modem. When it works well it's fast and effecient, when it decides to be cranky it's a real pain.

I had quite a few intermittent problems - some as you've described. Low battery level is often the #1 culprit. I also noticed that I have more problems with it hanging when I select the "Both" option (send & receive). I seem to have more success if I run those requests separately. I did eventually buy the newest version of MultiMailPro and that also seemed to clear up some of the problems of hanging. The only hang problem I occasionally experience now is receiving the last message - I think that might be a problem on my ISP end since I also experience that from time to time on the PC.

For James - any chance you will be posting a review of the Xircom or a comparison piece of all the modems?

Arrow Looking forward to it too

I was thinking the same thing. I would like to see a comparison between all the modems as well. I am thinking of buying one within a few weeks, but cannot decide which to choose.

Well, I'll add my two cents here:

I own both the Handspring modem and the CardAccess Thinmodem but not the Xircom one yet, so I'll just give my observations of the Handspring and Thinmodem, although they are basically only 33.6Kbps modems.

1. After testing both out, I've come to the conlusion that the Thinmodem has a better throughput rate than the Handspring modem. Although I haven't timed it before, I have a feeling that Web browsing is definitely faster with the Thinmodem.
2. As far as reliability goes, both the Handspring modem and the Thinmodem are about the same - at least I've never experienced a hang while downloading mail.

Well, I finally got my Springport to connect and download (by dialing into bellsouth.net instead of my other, local ISP -- bellsouth is my DSL provider). I also put in another set of fresh AAAs. But I must say I'm disappointed at the download throughput of this modem and my Visor Platinum. Even at 56,700 bps, many messages take as long as 10 seconds apiece to download. Is there a configuration setting that should be different, or perhaps an alternate modem initialization string?

I'm very close to ordering a Thinmodem, just for comparison's sake.

thanks again,

aa.
