-- Easy Alarm On/Off? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3133)

Am I the only one who wishes there were an easier/faster way to turn the sounds off? Instead of having to go to 'Preferences' / 'General' then turning the alarm off, it would be so much better if you could just hit an alarm silence button everytime you were going somewhere an untimely chirp might be frowned upon. Making it one of those stylus-stroke shortcut options might be a solution...

It would be REALLY cool if you could link certain calendar events to an automatic alarm off option, so that when you schedule an event, say 'Sunday Mass' you have a setup option that has the Visor automatically suspend any alarms during that period. That way you don't get nasty looks from the priest when you realize all too late that in your Sunday morning stupor you've forgotten to turn off the alarm reminding you about the 1:00 Redskins game...

Sounds like you need to try out Silence/SilenceHack. An excerpt from Silence's readme:

quote:
Features:
o Unlimited number of programmed silent periods
o Silent periods can be either one-time, or repeating
o Uses the same user interface scheme as the built in Palm (tm) Date Book,
so no re-learning is required
o Quickly silence or un-silence your device with a programmable pen stroke,
without leaving the app you are presently using
o Pen stroke silence can last indefinitely, or for a programmable time
duration
o Optional silence indicator icon visible at all times while the device is
silent

Thanks, I'll check it out -- though I've been leery of these things called "hacks" -- the name makes them sound so crude and illegitimate and I've heard of certain hacks wreaking havoc on people's Visors. What are 'hacks' really -- are they any different from 'legitimate' 3rd party programs?

"Hack" is an old term used by "Hackers", and it means an elegant programming solution to a thorny problem.

Hacks are sort of a cross between a program and a system patch. They are all "legitimate" 3rd party programs.

What this means is that while a program can do a specific task, a hack can change the behavior of all the program on the Visor.

For example, in all programs you have to tap the "menu" silk screen button in order to activate the menus.

But if you install Hackmaster and MenuHack, all the programs on your Visor now will allow you to tap the top of the screen to access the menus.

The problem is that some hacks don't like some other hacks, and some don't like some programs. So you have to play around until you get a set of programs and hacks that can co-exist.

The hacks that I personally use are:

Hackmaster: needed to use hacks in the first place.

FontHack: allows one to install alternate fonts and use them in other programs.

MiddleCapsHack: Speeds graffiti capitalization. Instead of using the upstroke, you can capitalize by merely starting to the left or right of center.

MenuHack: allows tapping the top of the screen to activate the menu bar

TealGlance: When you turn on your Visor, this displays your daily appointments and to-do list

Battery Meter Hack: makes the battery bar in the program launcher show the battery percent

SafeHack: when you turn off your Visor, this hides all your private records

PopUpCalculator: stroking from the calculator silk screen to the find silk screen pops up a tiny calculator over the current app, and allows you to paste the results of the calculation into the selected field in the current app

FindHack: makes the find feature more powerful

SwitchHack: allows quick switching from the current app to the previous app.

Some hacks are free, most are shareware.

Instead of TealGlance, take a look at HotDate. I LOVE this little free program. I have it set to turn on whenever i tap my TODO button.

Instead of SafeHack, I use PadlockPlusHack. It has the option of hiding private records when you turn off and also sets up letters for your buttons so that you type in your password to use your visor (a timed lock helps so that you're not doing this EVERYTIME you turn on the visor)

Instead of SwitchHack i use PhlegmHack (sounds horrible eh?) It allows you to go to the last app you were using and with a different stroke, pulls up a list of the last bunch of apps you used (which you can clear so the list doesn't become HUGE!..you can also set it to always include certain apps in the list or to ignore certain apps and not include them).

Finally, I recently installed ScreenShot Hack. Basically takes a screenshot of your visor whenever you want and then syncs it to your PC. An included PC app converts all screen captures to .bmp files. Really cool!

Thanks for the clarification -- it was negative association I was making with the term 'hacker' that was making me concerned that 'hacks' might be crude and possibly unstable programs that could potentially damage my Visor permanently.

Of course, one has to keep in mind that some people have had problems with their Visor while PhlegmHack was installed (hotsynch problems and lockups).

PhlegmHack is listed on the Visor Incompatibility list.

I will check out the other programs you mentioned, though, thanks!

Thanks for the tip -- Silence is great! I have it set to activate during certain recurring periods (church, important meetings), and I can also activate it at will with a simple pen stroke. Brilliant.
