Unhappy

OK, I had to reset my GVD. Gets stuck on "Palm Computing Platform" screen. Try some more soft resets before going to hard reset. Now, after HotSynching is complete, the screen tells me I have to reset my Visor by tapping on the (on-screen) button. Then I'm back at the splash screen, stuck. Plus, I can't shut it off, and have difficulty doing another hard reset.
So, I remove the battery until memory's wiped, and then I try to synch, and...back to the same problem.

I've deleted Backup Buddy because I thought it might be a problem with it reloading some hacks.
Handspring TS suggested 10-20 soft resets, and hard reset, and sending it back... (On hold for an hour the 2nd call, gave up.) I've got all my data on the desktop, but I can't get it back onto the Visor! Aaagghh!
Anyone? Bueller? Anyone?

I've experienced such case and used up the batteries that come with my BVD. But I have never soft reset it 10-20 times. Is this really matter and helps?

I was eventually able to hard reset, but that hasn't changed my overall situation. I still can't get the sync to work without having a message at the end that says I have to reset by tapping the "reset" button on-screen, which freezes it on the splash screen.

Forgive me if this is a silly question, but are you using any Hacks? I had a soft reset problem with a HackMaster hack. Once I disabled it, everything went back to normal.

Ah, yes. I have been using LauncherIII, and had Hackmaster installed. The initial freeze happened while in Hackmaster, when I was turning on or off some other hacks (some word-finishing one and maybe DA Launcher, I forget).
Anyway, I think I'll stay away from hacks for a while, but in the meantime I'm unsure of how to sync without having unwanted stuff put back on. I've deleted some files from the Palm Desktop, but maybe that doesn't help(?) or maybe I haven't found the problem-causing files?
Any help would be appreciated.

My Visor works beautifully with HackMaster and:

AfterBurner Hack
Graffiti&Kbd
SwitchHack

The Battery Monitor Hack crashes the Visor every time. A few programs also crash it - I just remove them.

Backup Buddy 1.1 works well. Note that this version doesn't put any software on the Visor, so it shouldn't be causing the crashes.

What software do you have on yours, Hack or not? What versions?

Or you can always try a clean install, one by one but that's pretty tedious, and you lose any modifications.

OK, I'm new at all this, (had the Visor since Nov. 29), so I'm not sure what all's going on, but it seems that after I'm able to hard reset, the Visor displays programs that it's synching that I thought I deleted from the desktop. That's why I uninstalled Backup Buddy, to prevent synching of potentially crash-causing software/hacks.
I have about 25 games, (hey, it's got the memory...) and Big Clock, Uptime, Snoozer, Diddlebug, some SciFi Alarm app, and LauncherIII. (I was hoping I could upgrade to the 3.3 OS before installing a bunch of other stuff.)
So, does that tell you anything?
PDAbie :-)

Re-reading this, I realized I hadn't mentioned this. The thing is, I would like to disable some hacks, but I can't get to that point, since when I sync, I end up having to reset, which re-freezes the Visor...or can you disable thru the desktop?

Doesn't tell me a huge amount, because I'm new to this too.

However:

1) I remember a mention somewhere of older versions of Launcher III causing problems.

2) You cannot "upgrade" to OS 3.3, because the Visor does not have FlashROM. No matter, because 3.1H of the Visor includes some of the upgrades in 3.3. You can patch the Visor to 3.1H.1 with the 3.1.1 patch from the Palm website, however.

3) In my < 1 week of experience I have found that games are often the worst for causing lockups, although only when they have been run.

4) There is a (short) software incompatibility list on this website.

5) You can delete many of the files so that they don't sync. Go to the backup directory under your name in the Palm directory.

Wouldn't you know it -- as soon as I posted this I thought that maybe you couldn't even get to a point to disable anything in Hackmaster.

As far a disabling from the desktop, I'm not familiar enough with the details how the Desktop and Visor sync to know if this is possible.

Also as a note, the problem that I had with the Hackmaster hack was a hack problem, not a Hackmaster problem. And yes, it was the aforementioned BatteryMonitor hack that caused the problem.

You need to do a warm reset and remove the potentially troublesome apps. Warm reset is done by powering off the Visor, then hold down the Up key and Reset it. Hackmaster and apps that normally start automatically (LauncherIII etc.) will not be started.

You can then delete HackMaster (to start without any hacks) and do a soft reset.

If a warm reset does not work you can do a hard reset, if that does not help, as a last resort, you can remove the batteries for 10-15 minutes and you'll have a virgin machine again... off course you will loose all your data but at least you'll have a working visor again...

I've experienced almost the same problem. I had a working visor with low batteries. I changed the batteries, and the Visor was stuck on the Palm splash screen. I tried many soft resets and attempted to hard reset it with no luck. Eventually, I had to pull the batteries. ugghhh I don't know what happened... I just changed the batteries....

Any ideas?

I ran into this when I tried to move my stuff over from my Palm III and then clear it for my wife to use. I don't know if you're in that situation or not, but here's what worked for me:

Click on the HotSync Icon
Select Custom
Change the HotSync Action for System to "Do Nothing"

That cleared up my issues. Hope it helps you as well.

Svenski,

Do you then HotSync nothing? Or do you try to hotsync nothing when the splash screen is on?

Thanks for the help,
