Good point. I would think the sled would/should be included. The advantage of visor over Palm would be severely limited without the "infinite expansion" possibilities of the springboard. It's not like they would have to market it with the sled. Market it as a slim visor and just put the sled in the box on the way out the door. They could develop different sleds with more expansion possibilites in addition to the springboard (e.g. SD, CompactFlash, Memory Stick, etc.) and sell those separately. Visor: damn near everything all time. Nice logo, IMO. Of course if this device is targeted to the lower end user I can see them offering the sled as an added expense (a la serial cradle).

please NO! i would expect a slimmer visor to appeal to the business crowd and therefore not necessarily the lower end user. Better yet, it better have a nice metal case to complete the attempt at making a 'stylish, professional' visor.

But the m100 market has been hot. Handspring may want to target that area. None of the rumors have mentioned color. I agree; I would want an aluminum/titanium/platinum case with a springboard sleeve shipped standard, color, and flash RAM (not a big deal, but it'd be nice). But it may have a cheap plastic case, use the USB port for the springboard sleeve attachment (which could cost $40-$50 extra), non-flash RAM, monochrome screen, and look like a midget visor with the gout (like the m100).

A Handspring m100? You're right, I can see a half-baked attempt to keep up with the Joneses (Palm) and fishing in the teen market. I agree with the unit that you're hoping for... a slimmer, color, metal cased unit, with flash RAM.

The next OS update may be less eyecandy and more meat and bones update. Kind of a Mac OS X for the Palm OS family.

Handspring's rebate on the VDX is a good move to get some of those out of the warehouse before a shift and new product line comes out. The rumors from the upcoming introduction in China is interesting. I think that this will be a telltale Spring as the the future of Handspring.

Here's to hoping for the best.

Has anyone though as to why people are talking about the new Handspring Visor being released in Japan? I know that many new electronic components are released over seas before brought here, but Handspring is an American company. The reason why sony and mitsubishi release all of their new stuff out there is becasue that's where their headquaters are. It's the exact opposite for Handspring, the first place that they would release stuff is America, and then bring it to other markets. That's the approach that they've taken for all of their other components, so why would they change with this one?

The Springboard could not possibly be connected through the USB port because you can't drive a 32 MHz 16 bit bus over a 4 or 12 megabit serial link, it would need a new "cradle" connector, and one with as many pins as the current Springboard plus extra pins for the cradle input. Why? Because I can't see this connector being much smaller than the curent Springboard port, and that would take up all the space available on the bottom of the unit. I suspect something with 76 high density pins (68 for the Springboard and 8 for the cradle), wouldn't be any wider than the current visor, and could be as thin as the Palm V,
with the Springboard sled you'd have something about the size of a Palm V + Omnisky.

Alternatively, you could have an "abbreviated" Springboard slot, that wouldn't enclose the Springboard on the sides so the unit would be "hunchbacked" when a Springboard was installed. I would be worried about the mechanical forces on the Springboard slot in this case.

The editor over at PDABuzz mentioned, in passing, having unconfirmed pics of new Handspring products which he couldn't publish legitimately. That comment was all the more juicy in the context of this thread on his site. Excerpts from the relevant parts:

Is it just me, but isn't the entire sled idea a little too Palm5? This sounds way too entirely like a copy of the PalmV. It would be really interesting if the visor could turn into the universaly expandible handheld, but uhh.....th sled, come on, that just sounds so.....PalmV. But hey, when I get it, I'll probably love it. The case will be a problem though.

Unlike the Palm V, the piggyback adapter would use a Springboard interface instead of the serial connection, so the Edge would retain all of the Springboards advantages: higher bandwidth, true plug-n-play, ability to use serial and Springboard connections simulaneously (e.g. for keyboard and modems), etc. Less than a paradigm shift; more than a carbon copy. It'd be nice if the sled made the bottom of the visor the same form factor as a solo/deluxe/plat so as not to have to wait for accessories to adapt (although not nearly so important as leaving springboard specs the same). Has anyone heard whether the m505 will still sport flash RAM?

I hope I am wrong, but I doubt there will be a color version. How would HS sell the Prism if the Edge also had a color display? They would either have to drop the price of the Prism dramatically (no complaints here!), or make the Edge extremely expensive. I have a feeling it's going to be monochrome only, at least for a little while.

I personally like the curve on the back of the Prism and I think by looking at that we might have a good idea on how its going to look with this "piggy-back" on. I think its important that Handspring keeps the same connector, maybe the Springboard attachment will have a back similar to the Prism & when your not using it you simply leave it in the cradle? I think it will probably be (looking from the top) that rounded section, perhaps thinned a bit more, as the main body & then that square section on the back as the Springboard add-on.

The problem with the curve in the back of the Prism is that it prevents the cover from being snapped onto the back of the unit. This shouldn't cause problems with the Edge by itself, but I would hope that future full-sized Visors remain compatible with the current Deluxe and Platinum.

I got a feeling that the new visor will be priced at prism prices,prism will go down to plat prices (maybe tad more), plat to deluxe, deluxe to where it is is now, and solo, who knows, less then $150? Give the m100 a real run. This would probably be the only way to keep the prism line.

But what if, and bare with me, this might be crazy enough to work. You make the solo, cheaper. But, you make a new deluxe series, like the plat, but with different colors. Then you keep the prism around until inventory drops, and maybe kill it off. Then you can have a monochrome edge, at maybe a plat price, and the color at current visor price.
Sound crazy enough to work?
If they did this, it would explain why they lowered the price of the deluxe, get rid of the model as fast as they can. Kinda what Palm did with the 3xe. If I'm right, when HAND announces this, it would be as big as the geforce for imac only at first.

Boy am I psychic or what? I had no idea that the visor edge was coming out when I wrote this. Now I think that my question is answered.

I hope that this comes in a color version. A thin color device would certainly have me running to the store. I have been hesitant about buying prism because of the size but if we get a color, slim visor I'll be first in line.

BTW, I LOVE my VDx and I think that it is FAR superior to the palm. The Springboard is just awesome, I can get plug in books and stuff without burdening my 8MB. I think that what Handspring should do next is get more onboard memory and larger capacity expansion packs. Go Handspring!
