A question about internet access on a visor. Anybody doing it? I'm considering getting the modem attachment. I can't use land base lines, so I'll need to dial in. Totally mobile. Just wondering what everybody's experiences are.

Any browser recommendations to use on the Visor? How's the modem? Etc.

I got my modem on Monday, and it works great. I've been sending e-mail with MultiMail and used it to sync directly with Avantgo. I also used Avantgo to call up a few web pages and was very impressed at how good they looked. Can't compare it to Proxiweb, which I haven't tried, but since the AvantGo was free and I don't expect to do that much surfing with the Visor, it was fine.

Forgot to mention that my 10 and 12 year olds use AOL, so I downloaded the AOL Mail application and it is very nice, brings up 5 screen names, has a file cabinet and Auto AOL. They were really psyched. That alone was enough to convince my daughter to want a Visor or Palm IIIe. Like all the rest of the AOL stuff, very simple to set up. If you use AOL, it's a very worthwhile (free) app.

Proxiweb is free aswell...much smoother and better page layout (conversion). I really like this program.

Have you tried attaching files with multimail? that's my only problem with Proximail (it's free but...) i can't attach files to email.

Should i buy multimail?

at home? or in office? doesn't it require a regular phone jack to connect online?

If I am at home or in office. Why would I need to use visor's modem to get online..

Or can you use this modem when you are on the road?

I really want to dial directly from my visor into my ISP without the need of hooking in to a phone line. I guess I could hook the modem up to my cell phone? But then that's multiple gadgets to lug around. Any plans for a springboard that just dials out on it's own, without hooking up to a phone line?

Yeah but then your spingboard would be cellular, so you would need a connection from your visor modem to your cell phone.. BUT, then you'll see you will run into "billing" probs with your cell phone. There was an article posted here awhile ago but it's not there about someone who was charged wireless web minutes for dialing into HIS ISP with his visor when NOT using SpringPCS's wireless web option on his cell phone.

AOL too is working on "AOL Anywhere" which will encompass MORE than just Email... Hmmm possibly IM's and web usage??? can't wait!

It's just a little frustrating being at the front end of this technology, when we all know it should be possible to use our Visors andother handhelds to remotely log on to the web for news, mail, stocks, etc. Tons of demand out here for vendors who will give us tools to get on line quickly, easily and affordably.

I have my Visor with me almost all the time, so it'd be great if I was in the car, at work, on the bike trail, on a walk, at somebody else's house, OR WHEREVER, and I could just turn on my Visor, be online, and do what I need to do.

dialling into the internet is as easy as 1,2,3 ... if you are in Europe:
Download IR Link (free 30d trial) and diverse free email apps or proxiweb, set up your network stuff and dial your ISP's number. In Germany, cell phone providers even have special numbers inside their net which can be accessed at relatively low cost. So you can check your email anywhere via IR and a phone with an IR port.

Wireless service is currently available to Palm VII and soon it will be available from Omnisky for Palm V users. Omnisky is suppose to offer it to other palm devices in the future. Maybe if we keep asking, they make a springboard module for Visor. check out www.omnisky.com

~You~ can't attach files, or the program can't?

I haven't yet tried attaching files with it, but the documentation, which in all other respects has been totaly accurate, says that you can.
When composing a new e-mail, under the address there's the famililar paper clip,when you tap it it opens a box with file types and name.

Whether you should get it or not depends on how often you send attachments, and/or need all the other great features of Multimail, vs the $39 price. I like it, but I also have several e-mail accounts, personal and business which I like to track differently.

I will be using it often on the road, as I used to do with my Zaurus. Before a trip I get the local access number for my ISPs and then can send and recieve e-mail from my hotel, many of which these days have dedicated jacks in the phone.

As for why you'd want to use it in the office, probably you wouldn't, too often. However, if when you use your office PC, you connect through a proxy server and don't want anyone to have a record of where or how often you connect... well it might be useful then

there are business men (and women ) around using BIG, clunky, antiquated laptops, and i'm sitting here browsing the web on my visor!!

this is just amazing. i recommend (if you can afford it) getting a modem now and the six pack when it comes out!

If you are at the airport, how are you connecting to the internet? By the handspring modem connectd to a landline? Or are you connected by a cell phone? If it's by a cell phone, what are you using to connect to the cell phone?

Hoser, I've been reading all your posts about the modem module and well, you convinced me to buy one! I ordered it last thursday.. But sadly, I havn't gotten a delivery notice yet... 1 week tomorrow. I'm already starting to download the programs I'd be using. I have a multimail Pro demo. I like it but $39?!?!?! Does anyone else have another email client that does similar tasks yet costs less?? Or nothing!? I still have to download proxiweb.. Okay I'm getting too excited here now.. WHERE'S my MODEM!? okay must calm down....

Found MsgAgent email program through the newsgroups. Haven't tried it yet, because my modem hasn't arrived yet.
