I don't want to sound negative or accuse anyone, but the Edge costs $100 more than the platinum, right? And, Best Buy (I think) hires on comission, so, that may have contributed to the salesperson swaying you to the Edge. If you think it's worth the extra cost, then go ahead and keep it.

Posted by euangel on 09-08-2001 06:45 PM:

1) I have also heard that the Platinum will be discontinued.
2) I was in Best Buy last week, and was told that they are not paid on commission by one of the sale people.

Take those for what they are worth.

With the DLX and PLT being discontinued, it's safe to assume that form factor is as well, which means you won't be seeing new accessories, etc. However, there are already a ton of them on the market. On the other hand, the Edge doesn't seem to have captured as much of the market, and therefore, not as many third party accessories. It remains to be seen if Handspring continues with that form factor in new models.

For the record:

1) Best Buy employees are not paid on commision

2) They are idiots. NEVER ask a Best Buy sales associate for their opinion. I know that is a sweeping generalization, but, for the most part, it is true.

trust me, the edge is awesome...

I started with a platinum, and now am on a Prism - but I got my dad's edge in a couple of days agao (shh! it's a birthday present! (I didn't pay all of it FYI), I'm in love. You made the right desicion, and god, the edge kicks ass.

I'lll still use my Prism as it's in color, but I will die if they release a color edge. You did the right thing. It's worth a ton . It looks good. I'm in love!

It's the best monochrome PDA ever made. seriously. (I have a silver one kicks a$$!)

As forthe Platinum being discusinoted, that is true, as the Visor Pro will come out an replace it.

You madetheright choice though, god that edge is AWESOME!

and bb people are as dumb as rocks when you ask them about technolgy

Hey, Miradu, I too want to buy a new visor, I really want a Prism, if the Pro is going to replace the VPL, do you know if a new color one is coming out? I'd hate to buy a prism and they come out with another color one...

I don't think this is entirely true. Their sales associates are paid commision on their extended warrenty sales, and they do have contests on who sells the most. I would consider this a type of commision as well.

I've bought many things at Best Buy, but only because of their selection. I actually love the store, but only for the selection and sales they have. However, every purchase over $75 (single item) that I've ever made ther, I've been hit up atleast twice if I wanted the extended warrenty. A couple of the times I was approached by three or four sales personnel regarding extended warrenties.

So, don't put anything past a person whose out to make a few extra bucks for themselves if they sell you a more expensive item, or the extended warrenty. I'm not saying that every person there is looking to take you, but there's the potential....

Howdy,

Speaking of Best Buy... I went there yesterday and managed to find a Handspring Visor Edge leather case that had been previously returned, so the price was marked down. I noticed that the price had gone down 4 times! When i peeled back all the stickers, it started at $29.99, to $24.99, to $15.60, to $14.60, and finally to $9.60! You guys might want to look at your local Best Buy for returned stuff. It's CHEAP!

Suggestion

Just thought I'd throw my two cents in and give you some more to think about
I had upgraded to an Edge this summer. I loved it the first week or so, but started to find a few things annoying. First of all, I found the form factor uncomfortable. I just couldn't get it sit comfortably in my hand (and I use my visor A LOT). Also, I found the stylus to be a pain. At first, I loved the feel of it in my hand, but it was very hard on the screen. I use screen protectors, but it seems to have a very sharp point and I was finding it uncomfortable to change my pressure level. (I play Hmaki quite a bit ). I was also very disappointed with the springboard attachment. I found it indeed very cumbersome. Last, I was concerned about the fact that no keyboards had been produced that were compatible.
I had a blue Edge and I thought it looked sharp. I also like the rechargeable battery. I wanted to like my Edge, but after almost a month I had to be honest with myself. I guess that my suggestion boils down to... take your time and use it a lot for several weeks, do a little more research on it and then see if you want to return it.
By the way, I have a Plat now and love it, but would have gone with the graphite if it had been available. Good luck with whatever you choose.

Maybe it varies by store, but I just talked to a friend who works at Best Buy, and he said they don't get paid commission on anything, including extended warranties.

I have both an Edge and A Platinum -- Got the Edge when the new price break came through -- I love them both.

Seems like the Edge is better to carry (DUH) and I do think it has a better (clearer)screen. I really love the form factor -- though the Plat is a great PDA.

As to Lack of support due to discontinuation --There are so many Visor/Solo/Delux/ and Platinums out there I don't think that's a viable concern-- they will be supporting this format for a long long time.

I do think that there may be a continued lack of 3rd party support for the Edge and if HS comes out with a totally new form factor --Like the phone Treo(s) it could impact on the Edge's continued existence and support -- there just aren't as many of them.

If they (HS) come out with a Prism II or similar unit that is close to the Edge form factor and compatable -- that would go a long way towards continued support and 3rd party interest/development for the Edge platform. -- I would jump at a color edge // Prism II as would many many other HS fans. But does it or will it ever exist? Who Knows?

The edge is a fantastic form factor -- the screen is great -- The rechargeable battery is great -- it is a fantastic package--

BUT

The Edge has a junk stylus and an obnoxious Springboard sled--

AND
The Platinum is very well established -- has a great stylus and aftermarket Stylus (I will not type Styli) and works superbly with the Springboard.

You can't go wrong with either -- play with is as <ovaltine> suggested and keep it or trade it in on a Plat -- You can't go wrong!

Dudes and dudettes, thanks so much for the input. you guys are awesome!
well so far i am digging the screen and how clear and crisp it is. Yes the edge is faster but not that much than the VDX. Every body keeps saying that there is not to many third party products for the edge. thats cool for me cause i only use the back module and memory expansion only when i doing school work. the only thing i plan on getting for it is the stowaway or gotype when they come out, and mabye the visorphone. i would only get the visorphone just to lok pimped out, and have people sweat me for my cool pda/phone.

i am still questioning myself if i should go back and get the platinum, but my silver edge leaves no bulges in my slacks and i looks so techy and small.
as agian thanks everyone for the suggestion, please keep em' comming

This is true. I work at Best Buy and we do not get paid commission on anything. We present the service plans because some people actually do want them and how would we know w/o asking. If it seems like we are pushing it too much, I'm sorry. It's just I feel bad for the people that come in with a bad palm after 30 days and we have to send you to the manufacturer. Anyhow, to re-confirm...we do not make commision on service plans.

Thanks for your input.

Can I ask you a question? It's been reported here that (hope I'm not misquoting, if I am, sorry) if you purchased a Palm device and got the Best Buy extended warranty, you can basically exchange your unit for a different model by saying, for example, "gee... it doesn't seem to charge up to the usual 4.04... now I only get it to charge up to 4.02.

Is this true?

In otherwords, can I exchange a Visor for a Palm, or a Palm for a Clie, if I have the extended warranty by simply making up some minor problem I'm having?

Just curious...

P.S. Not that *I* would do that.....

I haven't heard *anything* about any disq'ed products from handspring, but what do I know...

I think the edge is excellent. It's faster than the VPL (even tho they have the same CPU), it's more durable than the VPL or VDX (IMHO), and the screen is a LOT easier on the eyes than the VPL screen is.

I think once you get used to the Edge you'll love it...!

Just too bad more people aren't buying them... They currently only represent 1% of the entire marketplace

Yes, that is true Shel. Just make up some problem that we can't check there at the store and they will grant you an exchange. The terms of the exchange are that you have to get a palm pilot of equal or greater value. If you must get a palm of lesser value, the store may give you store credit at their discresion. Good luck.
