-- Future -> IBM Microdrive for Visor? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=10461)
Hi,
I keep seeing ads for the IBM microdrive and I keep thinking that I have a Springboard slot that would love to have a 1 Gig Microdrive parked in it. I realize that the main problem would be OS compatibility but I have to imagine that someone is trying to figure this out. Any thoughts or information on this. This would really make the Visor a viable handheld computer. Thanks
Pritam
I'd love it, but you have to ask yourself - what's the point of a whopping gigabyte of storage if you can't plug anything else into the computer? Sure, you could store a helluva lotta MP3s on a 1GB microdrive, but without being able to plug in the MP3 player. You could store an entire country full of maps, but the GPS module would be in your pocket.
I think instead Springboard makers should use the microdrive as the storage medium of choice instead of flash memory, but still enable a file mover application that lets you use the drive for storage of unrelated files.
just my $.02

You can read these older threads where the MicroDrive has already been discussed.
The basic problem with using it on a Visor is basically two-fold: first, it's a Type II CompactFlash device (meaning it needs a Type II CF adapter module or a dedicated Springboard) and, second, it's power requirements exceed what the Springboard slot can supply.
