-- 8meg flash module and launcher III (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3069)

Unhappy

I got the 8meg flash module about 2-3weeks ago and I like it! But Im getting annoyed with it. I have launcher III installed and every time I remove the module or change the batteries in my visor the programs on the flash module go back to the apps tab of launcher III. So every time I change the batteries or remove the module I have to mess with moving the programs back to there appropriate tab. I also noticed that when I put a program that is on the module in a tab all of the programs in that tab have a bullet in front of them even if it isnt on the flash module. Is there any way to fix these problems? Or are there any other launcher programs that dont have these problems? Thanks

What version of Launcher III do you have installed? I have version 1.5.2 on mine, and have no problems with apps ending up in the wrong tab when I remove/replace the module or batteries.

The little "bullet" next to every app is kind of weird. Only 8 out of 60 apps on my Visor don't have the "bullet." If I use the Palm launcher, only the apps actually on the module are so marked, so it must be a bug in Launcher III. I've learned to ignore it. (But it doesn't go away...)

Question

I have version 1.5.2 installed. Thats strange I have the same version but have this problem you don't have. Do you have launcher III backed up on you module? I don't and was wondering if that might have something to do with it. I don't mind the bullets too much either. Im just getting annoyed with it every time I change the batteries (I use rayovac rechargeable alkaline batteries. So I have to change the about every other day or so) I have to move them back. Also what version of the module software do you have installed? And whats the version of the module you have? I have module version 1.2 and the same in the software. Thanks

You might try using Launch Em. It has a feature to assign any installed apps to certain tabs. So, with my OmniRemote module (save your money), it will automatically show up on the correct tab when I insert the module.

I was thinking about getting this module, but it sounds like you don't like it--what's the deal?

I have version 1.1 of the module and File Mover. Also, I have a copy of Launcher III on the module--there are four files altogether for Launcher III, and one has tab info. After you recreate your tabs and put the apps where they belong, try copying all the Launcher III files to the module.

Tom,

I'm having the exact same problem (with the current versions of Launcher and the module), so are you saying that you have Launcher on both the module and the Visor? I'd try this myself but without some more info I'm concerned that I'd really screw something up!

I have backed up launcher III on the module but it didn't affect it. I still have the problem. wonder if we should try e-mailing the maker of launcher III?

I purchased the module for my girlfriend's Visor, and I have the Innopak/2V for my VDX.

The memory upgrade blows. Don't bother.

It won't work with apps like Avantgo, etc. And even if you transfer the data files, the software is likely to crash.

I love the VDX, but the memory modules are a bad idea.

The back-up module, however, is a must-have!

VoxDei (and forvisor):
Actually, I double-checked; it seems I moved the big Launcher III file to the module (the app itself), and have copies of the three smaller files associated with it in RAM and on the module. Maybe this is the secret...I don't know. I have done several soft resets in the last couple of months to deal with third-party apps not working right, etc., and have pulled the module out and replaced it several times to demonstrate the Springboard idea, and haven't had any problem with apps reverting back to any single tab (they stay in the tabs I renamed/created and assigned them to).

As for the memory module "blowing," it doesn't at all. As long as you keep in mind you can't put apps which write to themselves or DB's which are written to by the app on the module (actually, you can keep copies of the apps or DB's on the module as backup; the Visor will write to what's in RAM, and you can periodically recopy the DB to the module), you shouldn't have any problem at all. I have almost 3 megs of images, documents, apps, copies of DB's (including AddressDB, DatebookDB, etc.) on the module and have no problems whatsoever. I never have to worry about running out of RAM or losing documents or apps to a hard reset.

Yes, it would be easier to use the backup module if that's what you want to mainly do, but you couldn't free up RAM by storing stuff on the backup module. To get at what's on that module, you would have to restore the whole thing to RAM, and it would only hold whatever is in your Visor's RAM at the time of a backup. I can use the whole 8 megs of my module on a Deluxe or on a 2MB Visor, and I can transfer apps/DB's to someone else's Visor selectively with the Flash module.

Cool

For those of us that use PeanutPress and MobiPocket, the Flash module rocks! I get all the advantage of free space to load anything I want, the ability to backup anything I can't afford to lose, and plenty of room to hold any books and magazines I download to read on the way to work or on brakes and such....and with Docs to go I can view any and all work documents I need with me at any time....was well worth the $40 I paid for the module, especially since it has so much more functionality than the backup module for the same price!

Angry

Well, the Launcher discussion got me to check out Launch'em, and now I'm hooked! But...I'm still having the same problem with the tabs!! When I take out the module, the icons all just go back into the main tab when the module is reinserted! I'm assuming, therefore, that this isn't an issue inherent to Launcher. Does it matter HOW the module is removed and reinserted? Does the Visor have to be turned off or something? I usually remove it while everything is running, but I'll play around with it and see.

Any thoughts...?
