-- Hotsync Problem (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14130)

Angry

I have a Prism, and have been using a serial cradle because I use NT at school instead of 98. Lately I have had a problem... I can't hotsync... and I can't work out why. Well, sometimes I can sync, and other times I can't... no idea why.

When I hit the button on the cradle, nothing happens, the visor does not light up, and sync. So, I go to the hotsync program, and run it from there... sometimes it works, other times I get no response from my computer, and other times I get a message on the computer that it is connecting to handheld, but never actually does.

Does this sound like a problem on the Prism's end, or on the PC's end. I have tried restarting the PC... no luck. I have soft reset the Prism, no luck... I have restarted the PC, and reset the Prism at the same time... no luck. I have made small offerings of blood to the computer gods, no luck. I am running X-Master as my hack manager, but no hacks are running at the time.

Normally, I am not too worried, but I am working on my masters thesis, and I have about 15 pages I wrote on my Prism that I can't get off. Any help anyone can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks.
-Russ

I'm having the exact same problem

Don't feel bad, I'm having the same problem. At least you can hot sync sometimes. I can't hot sync at all. It recharges the batteries while sitting in the cradle but it won't hot sync to save my life. Kinda sucks too becuase I have pictures I took with my eyemodule that I would like to transfer to my PC. If anybody can help me and the poor fellow above we well be much apperciated.

This may be too simplistic, but when my Visor stopped hotsynching recently I reinstalled the Palm software from scratch and it corrected the problem. I have no idea what caused it in the 1st place, but it works perfectly now...hope that helps!

Check with the Information Systems department. Windows NT allows the System Administrator to change and/or limit access to parts of the computer network (including uploading and downloading). You may merely be the victum of built-in security that can be changed.

When one presses the Hotsync button on the cradle, it simply shorts pin 3 to 4. The Visor then wakes up, starts the Hotsync application, and starts the Hotsync process. The process, up to this point does not even involve the personal computer. Since Visor did not do this, it apparently did not see the shorting of those two pins. Therefore I would assume it is a connection problem. Either the connector on the Visor and/or connector on the cradle have become dirty, or one or more of the cradle pins have become bent. I would think the more likely is dirt.

If dirt: I have not seen an official recommendation on how to clean the connectors. I would think either a pink pencil eraser, or rubbing alcohol (isopropyl, not ethyl) and a cotton swab. Be careful not to have too much alcohol that could run inside the Prism or cradle. And be careful not to push too hard on the cradle pins, or we might trade one cause for another.

If bent: I am not sure how too pull this off. I would think either some very fine needle nose pliers could pull then up, or maybe a paper clip bent into a small hook. Alternately one could try opening the cradle up and pushing the pins from below with a straightened paper clip. And again, be careful.

The other option: Forget all this, call tech support. They might give you instruction on how to clean the connector, or they may try a replacement cradle. Best of luck.

When this happens to me i do a soft reset to the visor and it will usually work. Some times my computer disables my usb port and then i have to reset the comos settings on the computer.

Cool Thanks

Thanks everyone for responding. So far today it has been working... I figured that because the button was not working, it had something to do with the Visor, or the cradle. So, I just ran my finger over the contacts... and tada, it worked. Just did it again to test, and it is still working.

I had tried reseting the Visor, restarting the computer, and re-installing software... all with no success... it is always the easy stuff that eludes us. The terminals did not look dirty at all... all of them were about the same, so I thought that if it was getting a charge, then it should have no problem getting a connection. Guess it is kinda tempermental. Thanks Potter for the advice.

Well I tried cleaning the connecters with a dab of alchohal. Didn't work, then tried reseting the Prism a couple times. That didn't do much either. I'm thinking of just unstalling the palm desktop software and reinstalling it. You guys have any other suggestions?

This is probably not your problem, but when I have hot sync problems two things correct it:

1. soft reset of the visor and/or

2. Even while trying to connect, right click on the hot sync sys tray icon, choose setup, and change the speed to a lower speed. Handspring suggested this was because my port doesn't do a good job of accepting high serial transfer speeds. Well, maybe, but I find that when I'm having problems and I was at a relatively slow 19000 and UP it to 38000 while trying to connect that works too--the act of changing it in the middle of a sync seems to make it connect.
