B2K2 Is exercising that pesky little Constitutional right commonly referred to as "Free Speech." So, yeah, let's strike that from our Constitution. And, heck, while we're at it, let's scrap the whole thing anyway. No, wait. Something just occurred to me. I think the Constitution was somehwat effective in producing, what was it? Oh yeah, the single, most successful modern political system in human history (some hiccups notwithstanding.) So, B, you go, dude. Because you don't have to own a unit to believe it should possess certain, basic standards in quality.
Free speech vs. Whining
If you have a legitimate gripe, feel free to express it. Yep, it's a free country.
Complaining about a product you don't even own just seems kind of weird...

After a mere four days of use, the paint is already wearing off the ridge at the bottom of the the back of my Prism and showing signs of wear (shininess) at the other "highpoint" on the back, almost exactly half-way up the unit level with the top of the central Handspring logo.
I'll definitely be returning it for a replacement, but not until Handspring have come out with a more durable surface treatment. Heck, I wouldn't even mind the dark blue of the underlying plastic, it they gave it some texture to make it matte.
My plans are to keep the prism (which does have paint wear) until I plan to sell it. Then I'll send it in for a replacement after I get the "next best thing." That way I can make sure I'm selling a good device and it will still have a good paint job. I'm rather curious why they decided to paint it to begin with because the plastic underneath wouldn't be that bad looking. I've noticed my cradle still looks good, is it painted? It doesn't feel smooth like the prism.

My new Prism has the same wer on the "ridge", and you know what? I don't care! I'd rather they spent their time on coming up with a way to snap the cover on the back of the NEXT generation of color visors. Or just license the flip lid from Tactilis.

My Prism showed a bit of wear after a few days. However, since it doesn't affect the functionality, I'm not going to return mine. Getting durable paint on plastic is not an easy thing to do. Not sure why they went that route anyhow. But I have suggestion (not trying to cover for Handspring's design) - put clear tape on the contact points where the Prism meets the cradle (and where the unit rests when sitting on a desk - if you don't use a case). It is clear, so it is difficult to see - plus the color comes through. I ride mountain bikes and we always put a clear protective tape between the bike paint and the cables that rub on the paint. Anytime you have two surfaces contacting, the paint will start rubbing off.

Hi DK: Boy, no kidding about the free speech thing. As I see your post is a great example. By the way, STILL poking around looking for those "large denomination bills" deep inside my Prism!!! LOL 
Color coming off
Hey everyone...
Was wondering... Right now I am using the Bi-fold from handspring and the unit rubs up on the memo pad... wondering if anyone has seen the color rub off on to it...
I have it happening on mine... Other than that its been pretty good...

Pt paint fix
I found a fix for my Pt paint and connectivity problem- Palm IIIxe.
Sorry Handspring, I was interested in the expandability of the springboard concept but it just didnt deliver.

I find this whole paint thing pretty disappointing in a $450 product. And I think it is inexcusable. I compare my two week old prism with my 5+ year old HP100LX and HP12c:
HP100LX: loose hinge and closing latch (mechanical); replaced battery door following 4' drop onto pavement matte finish on plastic case shows some fine scratches from life in a briefcase full of pens, pencils, binder rings, alligator clips, and all kinds of other hostile items; absolutely no signs of wear on any of the keytops or keyboard field printing; has never been in a case
HP12C: what can I say? Is it possible to hurt one of these with less than a Sherman tank? I have used the slip case with mine, and have no signs of wear. I have seen old units that have not been kept in the case, and the mini-manual printed on the back has shown signs of wear. But as with the HP100, absolutely no signs of wear on keytops or the priting on the keyboard field.
Prism: Shiny "wear points" at high spots, primarily at the base, at this point. One small spot of missing paint on right side where the prism was exposed to the rigors of briefcase life despite bing in the Visor slim case. Significant wear showing on the painted icons on the app buttons (why in the world were these icons not molded into the buttons??).
I love the prism from an operational standpoint, but I really think they need to hire someone from HP to take over the manufacturing and QC on these things. For a heavy user, they need to treat this as an industrial product, not a consumer product. Save the paint for products to compete at the low end.
Now to my subject line (at last!)
Why do these things get glowing reports at the sales sites that allow feedback? From the responses in this thread, it seems like this is not an isolated problem. If it were known to potential buyers, Handspring might be quicker about fixing their problem.

Seeing wear in same places as most users (the back ridge) where after a little more than a month of ownership the paint has completely rubbed off. Additionally, I am seeing signs of initial wear on back flat portions of Prism and the front area where the buttons are. I know that some of this wear is from general use (i.e. taking the Prism out of the slipcase to use and hotsync) BUT, after ONE month! It is inexcusable that a $450 item that is the "flagship" of HS should have this going on.
I hate to think of what my Prism will look like after a couple more months of use. Hopefully HS or some third party will have some kind of replacement case with better quality (maybe with some other color options). On a lighter note, I still think this is a great product outside of this issue.
I just use a tape to protect my prism temporary before eb make a case for prism and minstrel s. i put the tape on the part that looks like a pyramid, because it's always touch the slip case and the cradle.

Why didn't I think of that: Scotch tape to protect the finish of a $450 product! All kidding aside, thanks for posting this, as it might be a preferable solution to allowing the finish to all rub off. But you must admit that it is pretty shabby to have to do that.
I know.
I just use it until the new eb case come out.
