-- Handheld Trade-Up Program (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=15804)

Cool O I C

I see that. ($199.00 for a Visor Edge? HELL YES!)

But it's the part about Handspring "disposing" of the PDA's you turn into them!

I hate to burst your bubble, but the article says the trade-in:
quote:
will run through Sunday, July 1st, 2001

I'd bet the price-drop won't happen until after that.

I looked up United Data Trech's website.
http://www.uniteddatatech.com/
They are a "full service reclamation company and independent distributor of new and refurbished" computer products. Ergo, it's very likely that if a PDA is turned in to Handspring for this program, and can be resold, it will be.

You made Toby say "Bah." We may have to smite you for that. Where's my hammer?

That is a very good idea to spur sales on the edge, wihtout making a "rebate" or a price drop. The problem is is I'd rather see the Visor's and Palms and anyhting they get a good collection sold at a very very cheap price to schools to use. Yse schools get old equipment, but a set of 30 Vdx's is a very cool thing to have! They can recycle the old stuff, but do'nt throw away good stuff.

From the 'Which Visor Do you have?' thread, I can see why : http://discussion.visorcentral.com/...=&postid=102568

Only 5 out of 149 Visor Owners owned only the Visor Edge.

Posted by chartboy on 06-07-2001 10:01 PM:

Thumbs down rather have an M505

I'd rather have a Palm M505. Handspring is getting close to just giving away the Edge.

Posted by Vertigo on 06-07-2001 10:05 PM:

Did that smaller edge connector on the edge turn out to be a huge flop? I haven't seen a specialized modules using it yet. (Trying to hold back the 'nee-ner nee-ner!' )

Posted by socialmenace on 06-07-2001 10:15 PM:

All I have to say is that maybe Handspring should expand this trade-up to make it a $100 savings toward ANY Visor. I personally would rather have a new Prism than an Edge.

Posted by Vertigo on 06-07-2001 10:19 PM:

That's the point. Handspring is not having trouble selling the Prism - everyone wants one already.

I was wondering the same thing. I'm also concerned that HS wants to make the Edge connections both for springboards and keyboards etc the future standard to build on. This could be an attempt to get more Edge's out there so they can release new products with the same connections.

If Palm has seen the need to standardize on the serial connector why not HS?

This trade up is tempting, msotly the giving my VDX to someone else option. (I figure they probably require you to re-register the thing on the website, but hey, why not)

I won't complain about how much money, that sounds fair.

What I think is more important is that everyone in the biz is clearly doing two things: cutting prices, clearing inventory.

That said, anyone with a Stowaway is probably better off waiting until the stowaway for the edge comes out and then buying whatever becomes available then, and selling their VDX off. You'll probably get $100 for a VDX at the end of the summer, and you'll probably get a not-yet-released handheld AND get to use your stowaway.

That said, I'm still tempted to give my VDX to my fiancee, and share the handhelds until I have a stowaway for the edge.

I hope handspring realizes that a lot of people are just waiting until they can get a stowaway for the edge. I think they are probably more going for the competitive upgrades, I mean this could get a lot of V and Vx converts. The Edge does have a lot to offer them...

Oh well.

True, but there are other inferences you can make from that poll:

But essentially you're right. I'm sure Handspring's probably concerned about the rate that Edges are going out the door, compared with the company's other products.

That's hardly an insignficant qualifier. It's exactly the right kind of program if you're interested in the Edge, which seems to have attracted limited interest. Even at $299, the Edge is overpriced, IMO, so as far as I'm concerned the program doesn't exist. And since it's only going on for three weeks, it's really more of a sale than a program, ostensibly to make the Edge look better in Handspring's Q2 report.

I think it's a shrewd move on Handspring's part, insofar as the Edge probably sells primarly to previous handheld owners in the first place.

Posted by bkbk on 06-07-2001 11:30 PM:

Still, even if you think the Edge is overpriced, it's not just because it's "thinner" than the VDX; like the Plat & Prism:
- it's faster
- 16 grey scale
- OS 3.5, which means you can do the current free OmniSky modem deal.
(Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the part where they're throwing in free sex w/Claudia Schiffer to sweeten the deal!)

Hot damn; "seek & ye shall find," -- er, or something ...
Anyway, that wish for the Prism drop has come true.
Wish I knew about this last week....

(Wonder if this solidifies a ThinPrism in the works....)

None of which distinguishes it from the Platinum, which is still cheaper. Unlike the Palm V series, I don't think the Edge is a unit that the uninitiated encounter in CompUSA and instantly regard it as a must-buy, especially with a gauche external stylus clip, a plastic rim, and a $400 price tag. The fact that HS has $100 to fudge on the Edge's MSRP this early suggests to me that it was intended to be a high-margin product, reaffirming my opinion that the Edge is overpriced.

Whoa. For a minute there I didn't know what you were talking about. And here I was, thinking that HS wouldn't drop the Prism's price for another six months. I wish I knew about this a month ago. For anyone on the fence, grab those $399 Prisms now.

Posted by bblue on 06-08-2001 12:17 AM:

Cool HA!

Well, has anyone else noticed I am VERY GOOD at predicting the future?

The EDGE was a cheap move by Handspring. They simply developed a less-space-consuming expansion slot, and re-fit the PDA. It's not that hard, judging by the wasted space in my Deluxe. I'm pretty sure re-shaping the Platinum was not much difference.

Now PALM stuck their heart & sould into the M500 / M505. The form factor is nothing short of stellar. The drool factor is through the roof! And lookee here! A bluetooth module has ALREADY been announced, and will retail for $150.00 !!!

Palm took a risky investment, and so far, it is paying off. I guess the stories about how Hawkins & Dubinsky could do no (ok... little) wrong were not true!

---
As for BKBK, that's not Claudia. Nope. They heard your plea to lower the price of the prism, and it's just Donna Dubinsky in a thong bikini... with a new hairdew!

I'm not sure why you're calling it cheap. It has the highest quality components of any Visor yet. It has metal buttons, better screen, OS 3.5, nice thin form factor, and it's faster. Also, at $400 (well $300 now for us owners of PDAs) I'd hardly call it cheap

Hopefully we'll get our bluetooth modules soon too. Keep in mind the SD bluetooth stick is announced, not neccesarily released. By now I'm sure everyone on this board knows the difference .

The drool factor of the formfactor on the Palm M5XX series is true I think, but the none adjustable screen is a definite problem I think.

Yeah, I think w/the Edge J.H. was trying to repeat the move he succeeded w/so stellarly w/the Palm V: change nothing but the look of the HW, and see if it sells -- and it went through the roof.
But Palm V never had a "big bro. looking over its shoulder" all the time it was out, the way the Prism does the Edge. And on top of that, there's plenty of other competition out there now for that $400, as has been pointed out.
