-- Handspring Sport Case (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=8716)

Possibly lost in all the whoopla over the Prism and Platinum, Handspring has a new sport case. A bit pricey but another belt case option.

I just ordered one and I'll let everyone know about it when it get here.

Mark, what color did you order? Sounds like black is different material from others. I'll be waiting for your review! I wish I knew about it Sunday then I would have ordered with my Prism to save shipping.

The sport case looks a lot like the neoprene case that came with the Minijam, except without the flip cover. The MJ case has the beltloop and a clip on it. The only thing that I like about he MJ case is the springboard pocket on the front of it. Being neoprene, it is a tad too snug, and a bit too sticky getting the Visor out. I'd think that since Handspring says it's also for the Prism (with the slightly larger form) that it's a bit larger.

Black nubuck... I already have a cheap neoprene case that i got at Wal-Mart several months back. I use it at work (a fairly "dirty" environment) to hold my Visor in the E&B Slipper. Hopefully, the new sport case will hold the Slipper as well.

Mark, this may be a weird question, but does visorcentral reimburse(sp??) you for any part of the case now that you are a mod.

No, I purchased it on my own. As for being a moderator, it's a volunteer position... I receive no monetary compensation. Now, if VC wants to send me goodies, I won't say no.

I wish they had more pictures of the new cases on the Handspring site. They only show a front view, making it hard to tell how good the case is.

I hate to say it, but I'm more interested in the new sports cases than I am in the Platinum and Prism.

Clip or Loop?

Does anyone know if this comes with a Belt Clip or a Belt Loop?

Posted by MarkEagle on 10-19-2000 05:09 PM:

The details state "Convenient belt loop and lanyard D-ring help you carry it anywhere".

There are some slightly better pictures at amazon.com of the new sports cases. I think they call them "Handspring Neoprene" or something.

Still no shot of the belt loop, or of an open case.

Its funny, the photos on Amazon dont show the lanyard D-ring. Wonder if it is removable.

Not here yet... the order status has changed to "Shipped" since lunch time today... so I guess it's on the way. I opted for standard shipping so it'll probably be a few days anyway. I hope to see it by Monday or Tuesday... ooh, just in time for Halloween!

Any sign of the Sports Case yet?

Posted by CaptainVisor on 10-31-2000 10:20 PM:

Exclamation Got mine!

I received my black sport case yesterday.

I like the way the belt loop has a quick disconnect (similar to some camera or camping straps). The D Loop is not removeable but not in the way either.

My VDX fits nicely.

I've tried many cases and so far I like it the best. A bit casual, but my Visors always there.

The nubuck material is nice but probably will be a lint magnet.

Posted by MarkEagle on 10-31-2000 11:49 PM:

The UPS man arrived with the first pack of Trick or Treater's...

For those of you curious about the belt loop, here it is:

I've posted some other pictures as well.

The front of the case has a stiffener built into it to protect the screen. It's hard to tell whether it's plastic or just cardboard, but it seems to be substantial enough to offer some protection. The inside of the case is felt lined so the Visor won't be getting scratched. It also has a generous Velcro closure.

The tag on the side of the case says "Incase"... I wonder who manufactures this for Handspring? Actually, it's identical to the PDA Pouch except for the cool Handspring logo on the front.

The Visor fits in the case very snug. It's such a tight fit that there's just no way my E&B Slipper will fit inside... a bit of a disapointment, but I'll get over it.

As CaptainVisor said above, the black nubuck will probably attract a lot of lint but I think the case in general will attract a lot of attention. Overall, I like the case.

I'll post some more comments after giving it a road test for a couple of days.

Use without plastic cover?

Does the sports case offer enough protection so that the removable cover is not needed? If the built-in stiffener is cardboard, I'd be nervous about it...

After a week of daily use, it appears that the case offers at least minimal protection. Since the "stiffener" is in the front of the case, the Visor needs to go in screen side out. My job (warehouse manager) constantly puts me (and my Visor) in harms way when walking through storage aisles and working near skids, pallets, and other assorted piles of freight. I've taken a couple of "direct hits" on the case with no damage to the Visor. I really think the stiffener is plastic... it seems too "firm" to be cardboard, but I have not received any relpy from Handspring or Incase (the actual manufacturer).

As for the Visor's snap-on cover, until you mentioned it, I hadn't tried it. Just popped it on... causes the fit to be quite snug in the case but gives some additional peace of mind to the screen protection (although I find it inconvenient to have to remove and install the cover).

The bottom line is that unless you're going to take fairly hard hits directly on the front of the case, I think it should hold up rather well while offering fairly decent protection. Of course, your mileage may vary...
