-- Do I lose contents when changing battery? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=690)

I'm new to the handheld world. Just had my Visor for a couple of weeks. About half-way through my first set of batteries now, and wondering if when the time comes to replace them, will I need to do a hotsync right away to get it all back in the Visor? I don't see a CR2025 battery or the equivalent in the Visor, so don't know how it would retain contents without power.

atrick,

There is a capacitor that keeps the memory powered for a short time (supposedly ~1 minute) while you replace the batteries.

Be sure to Hotsync just before you change your batteries, just in case. Since you only have less than a minute to swap batteries, be sure you have the new batteries our of the packaging and ready to go before you remove the old ones. Also, you will probably need something to pry out the old ones (it's a tight fit).

FYI, if you happen to lose your data during a battery swap, just hotsync after. But be sure to set the hotsync manager so that the "desktop overwrites handheld" before you hotsync. This is important.

If you're really interested, check the deja.com boards for discussions on whether you should change the batteries one at a time or remove both then insert the two new batteries.

Your mileage may vary, but I reciently took my Visor apart. Removed the batteries, unscrewd the case, poked around, put my name inside, reassembled it. After replacing the batteries I expected to have to resynch, but no! After 10 or 15 minutes of no batteries, it still had all my data. Everything was still intact. A nice surprise indeed.

I also take off the battary for more then 5 min. and i don't need a syn. I guest they have a special battary that can keep it alive more then a min.

No, no battery inside but some memory can retain it's settings/charge for quite awhile. Nothing like flash memory but 'bubble' memory can retain it's settings for over 15 minutes. Maybe that is what the visor it useing.

Question

How low should I let the regular batteries get before replacing them? Will the Visor give me a message telling me to replace the batteries? (I'm at 30% after the 1st week)

Yes, there is a warning when your battery reaches a certain voltage (2.1v). It will keep warning you that you need to HotSync and replace your batteries until you do it or until it doesn't work anymore.
