-- Soft Reset - A Way of Life?!?! (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=2334)
My first try with a USB HotSync didn't work. So, I called customer support and they gave me the wonderful REGEDIT fix that worked. However, now anytime I restart my home computer and occassionally just out of the blue, my HotSync won't work. It only takes a soft reset to fix it (Wheeeewww!) but I'm getting to the point where I just do a soft reset before trying to sync.
I'm sure others have found the soft reset to have become as commonplace as reading the front page of USAToday off AvantGO, but I just had to vent!
I hot sync with a USB at home and a Serial cradle at work and I have never had any problems.
The only time I have had a problem was if my VDx was off and I had JotLoc running and did not put my password in before hotsyncing. Then I would get a fault. If Jotloc was not running everything worked fine.
I was having the USB hotsync problem and to solve it what I do is this. Don't boot-up your computer with the Visor in the cradle! Ever since I started doing this, I have not had to do a soft reset!
Try it and let me know.

This info is assuming you use Outlook. My sync-problems got fixed when I went to Internet Explorer and under tools | internet options | programs -- I had to choose MS outlook for E-mail. It was set for Compuserve. I have Compuserve but when it was choosen I could not Hotsync my visor. Choosing outlook for e-mail did not disturb Compuserve being able to receive E-mail and has allowed me to hotsync with no problems for the past 4 days. Also, make sure that outlook is chosen for calendar and contacts.
I don't use outlook. I tried every ways that were mention on this discussion site. It doesn't matter if I had the unit in or out of the cradle, what transfer speed I used and so on. I still have intermittent problem. It's sad to say but for me Soft Reset is a way of life.
ok, i feel like an idiot. what is a soft reset? can someone e-mail me?
ScottyP, there are no stupid questions.
A soft reset is done by sticking a straightened paper clip or other wire-like object into the 'Reset' hole on the back of the Visor. It is like re-booting the Visor.
In cases of dire emergency, it sometimes becomes necessary to do a 'hard' reset, where you hold the power button while inserting the clip. It re-boots, AND erases all your data and 3rd party software.
There is also a 'warm' reset, which is inbetween the two.

Sometimes my Visor won't HotSync either, and it requires a soft reset. Seems it happens whenever I move the cradle around though...probably just coincidence.

I do several dozen synchs a day on my work NT PC via a serial cradle. Whenever I occasionally dial-up to my network at home with my Win98 PC and try to synch to Outlook via my USB cradle it fails (at least 90% of the time anyway). A soft reset always fixes it. So I've just learned to deal with that. It seems like a bug to me.
I have done a reset - actually tried all thre versions - and now I get only the Palm splash screen. Nothing else happens, and the unit does not shut off.
Sheesh!

I was able to reset by taking out both batteries & leave them out for a few minutes. Thanks to Backup All, everything was back to normal after synching once.
I too have had this problem and have talked to tech support on this matter twice. The first time they wanted me to try the registry fix. I did that and things worked for awhile but I'm back to soft reset. The last time I talked to tech support they said they would send me a new Visor or USB cradle.
He also admitted that Handspring has been looking into a problem with the USB chip on the Visor that may be causing these problems.
