Hi everyone. I was thinking of getting a cell phone and the sixpack from infomitt, but then I realized something: I should just get a cell phone module! It will automatically be linked to my address book, and I wouldn't have to carry two different gadgets. Also, it could probably be used as a cellular modem at that point. I wonder about price and form factor, though, and compatibility with current phone networks, (which I don't know too much about).

If anyone knows of any cell phone modules under production or even anounced, please post a message. also, if you have any good ideas (other than a handsfree option--that should be given anyway), post away. Thanks.

Why hasn't anyone answered? Does NO ONE know of any cell phone module? I think that would be better than an FM Radio! Imagine all the things that would be put in. I saw a company that announced a phone module a long time ago, but I forgot which company. If you know of any, please let me know.

I haven't heard more than speculation about the cell phone module. There's a list of announced modules at the Handspring site.

A cellphone module is definitely in the works from Handspring, but so far they are keeping mum about it. Nobody is making one as yet, as far as I know.

I'm just curious. Do you think the performance quality of cell phone module (ie. good clear reception etc.) will be as good as a Nokia or a Motorola cell phone? I think it will be hard to beat the quality of current phones right now. If it's not as good as your current cell phone, are you still going to buy it?
Also, for the six pack, I have not seen a hardware that can do many things works as well as it was advertised to be. I probably will stay w/ backup module, modem and maybe 8MB module and won't get too excited about the 6 pack until it's proven itself. The same will go for cell phone module. I've already had a cell phone, why do I need to invest in another cell phone that I'm sure won't be any better than what I've got.

My guess is that the cell phone module will probably be made in conjunction with a major player. So, it will more than likely be the same quality as current cells. And as far as "Why would I buy one?"...It just adds that extra bit of geekiness to your lifestyle.

Because I take my visor everywhere I go but I usually leave my phone locked in my car. With a cell module, I could take both without carrying 2 devices.

Of course the answer there is to have the cell phone module use an earpiece that has a built-in pickup in it. This way you can hold the visor normally while you talk. Sure, you'd look like a secret service agent, apparantly talking to nobody, but it would be better than having to say "Hang on while I take the Visor away from my ear to write that down" to someone.

Of course, with this scheme, the built-in microphone stays useless.

Anyone seen those new things that plug into many of the cell phones? The phone remains in your pocket. And there's an ear-piece (which apparantly has a built in mic right in the ear piece). It gives cool, hands-free phone operation. That would be awesome for the visor cell phone module...and it leaves the visor free for taking notes!

i agree! being able to hold your visor and access the information on it AND talk on the phone (via a hands-free earplug/mic thingamabob) would rock my world.

Those cell phone mics that fit in your ear, I have one, and it's great. As mentioned in a prior post, you do look like you are talking to nobody.

I was at the ATM awhile back and was waiting for this woman to finish...she was just yappin' away to no one. I moved back a few feet. Then she turned and I saw the headset...it's spooky until you realize what's going on.

I did learn this from cell phone shopping for my company. Digital phones are not compatible with other networks. Each one has a chip for compatibility with each service provider. Therefore, if you by a Nokia phone from AT&T you can't turn off the service and then get Sprint PCS service to that phone. I guess that you could get the chips replaced. But of course technology is always changing and I did this info gathering in November AND it was most of the sources were cell phone employees at the mall kiosks.

i was trying to kill some time at work and stumbled into this. Not only do they show a Cellphone module, but it looks like they've already got the software developed for it! I wonder how many other springboards are floating around Handspring HQ being used by the 'higher-ups' right now???
