Is there any solution to the useless backlight on the Deluxe that does not involve strapping a flashlight to it OR replacing the unit? Haven't they found out a hack that can brighten the backlight? Seems if they can speed up the processor with software, they should be able to do ANYTHING!

Also, I've heard a bit about something called "Screen burn" that results from using the backlight. Please clarify.

Try GreenLightHack at palmgear.com. It rweverse the pixels making it easier to read the Visor with the backlight on.

back in the day, before screen-savers and automatic sleep, "screen burn" happened when the pixels on your screen stayed the same for a long time, "burning" them into the display. Some older monitors have ghost images on them which are the result of this.

With the LCD screen, I expect it has something to do with the additional light coming through the bits burning into the display.
I've not read anything about this before, though.

it does involve a light but you may find it useful anyway, take a look at www.pdalight.com they have a small LED that can be attached springboard module.

Don't get me wrong. I don't hate the inverted backlight LOOK, (in some cases, I do) , I just hate how it turns my pixels INVISIBLE. So I guess greenlighthack wouldn't work. .

I'm looking at the cliplight.

I use Lighthack. The standard screen is better in the dark, but in dim light it sucks. Lighthack,
I guess like greenlighthack, flips the light and dark pixels making it easier to read in dim light,
but not as good looking in the dark.

I tried ordering the light from pdalight.com using my paypal account. They have yet to accept the money and now their server appears to be down. Hmmmm...what does that say!

I would hardly call the screen useless. As stated in my previous email, the Visor screen looks better in the dark than the older Palm screens. (Which I believe were not capable of 16 greyscale display?)

If you want to complain about hacks not included by Handspring, one could probably name a bunch of them, including Hackmaster itself. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't use it. And also include in the list keyboard+grafitti, popup calc, apphack and more that most, if not all, of the Palm and Handspring users I know have on their machine.

Oops. Did I get on a bit of a soap box there? Sorry. I just wanted to point out that there are a lot of programs that people would love to have included on the system when you buy it. I'm sure that Handspring would love to have lots of software ship with their machines. However, they probably thought that no one would buy a $699 Visor Deluxe.

Maybe I'm in the wrong section (this is deluxe right?). Or maybe I have a buggy unit. But my backlight doesnt seem the least bit dim.

I use the thing for hours of reading in bed each night, as a flashlight to find my way around the house and the yard, even to light up the clock on the wall so I can see what time it is.

Also, after 300+ hours of backlight I have none of this "screen burn" So I dont think we need to worry.

"Screen burn" is something that happens on a monitor when the same data is displayed for a long time and physically changes the colors of the shadow mask inside the CRT itself. It cannot happen on an LCD because there is no shadow mask. Using the backlight will cause absolutely no harm to the display. The only possible ramification of long term backlight use is that the backlight itself has a finite life. This is not even much of a risk since the backlight life is measured in many thousands of hours of use. It is longer than anyone is likely use during the life of the PDA.

BTW - Leaving the same data on your LCD for weeks on end should also not cause any burn-in.
