-- Purchased a Plat on Ebay-- will HS cover warranty? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12380)

Posted by srwdc1 on 02-28-2001 08:11 PM:

My 13-yr old son purchased a Platinum on ebay for $260. (Seller had owned it for a couple weeks, said it did not meet his needs. Son considered a IIIxe, but says Visors are more cool among the 7th graders. Dad (me) has Vdx since Nov'99).

Now son realizes he could have got a brand new Plat for $260 from staples.com (w/$40 rebate). He's kinda bummed, but, hey, that's how you learn, huh? Plus he has now been initiated into the world of price comparison on e-bay.

But, in case the e-bay plat has problems (paint, etc), will HS honor a warranty, even if he is not the original purchaser?

Or maybe I should buy his e-bay plat, and let him get a new one from Staples. Then I could give my Vdx to my (technophobe!) wife.

Thats a very good question. I don't think i've ever had to give any kind of proof of purchase to handspring when i've sent my visors back. but i can't say that for sure. good luck.

Unless it's been taken apart and molested it (e.g. painting it, etc.) HS will honor the warranty. In fact if I was buying a visor off e-bay the first thing I'd do upon receiving it would be to call Handspring and arrange for a new/refurbished unit directly from them.

? why would you arrange for a new/refurbished? And even in that case, wouldn't HS want to know that I was the purchaser (and therefore the holder of the warranty)?

? sorry, don't understand. If the "paint is scratching" does that mean they WON'T replace it?

I guess I don't quite get your subtleties...

Thanks

Handspring warranties the product, not the person. If you paid for it you paid for the warranty as well unless the warranty was void when you purchased it. Handspring will give you the benefit of the doubt if it doesn't look tampered with.

Paint issues have been common with the Prism and Platinum. New units are shipping with a better paint job, but there are still old ones with the bad paint job out there. Just know that if you notice the paint coming off of the Platinum they will replace it for free. It's rather hard to notice on the Platinum (Prism as well) because the underlying plastic is fairly similar to the paint.

Mike, I'd probably tell them that the screen is slightly loose and/or rattling. It happens frequently enough that I would be surprised if srwdc1's son's unit didn't rattle a bit from the shipping. Call the toll-free customer service number, and if they want you to call tech support tell them that a hard reset didn't fix the problem. After a hard reset the unit should function perfectly. If it doesn't they will arrange for a repair without needing to deal with tech support. Although I have to say if I were srwdc1 I'd be giving my son the deluxe while I used the Plat "just to be sure everything works right ."

Why would you call and ask for a replacement if you just bought it? Also, how exactly is the replacement unit better than the one you just (hypothetically) bought from someone?

You would want a replacement becasue oyu got it off ebay, and you can never trust ebay.. (though I do.. silly me!) Overall, I would leave it the way it is. You got a good deal, and it works, right? The warrenty still covers it so everyones happy!

One off of eBay hasn't been through the expert hands at Handspring to make sure everything works properly. I'd just want to be sure. It wouldn't be anything that'd keep me up nights, though.

Arrow Handspring will honor warranty

I know for a fact that Handspring will honor the warranty. All they need to process a replacement is a valid credit card (to make sure you return the one they are replacing), and your serial number. Remember that a lot fo people give these things as gifts.

thanks for the ideas!

Thanks for the ideas! didn't know I would get such a discussion going!

The Platinum arrived yesterday, and seems fine. He did a hard reset to wipe out the other guy's (Ebay Seller's) information, and has had lots of fun so far. (gotta get him palmlostorstolen insurance before he takes it to school). Now we'll see if the Platinum works as a chick magnet in 7th grade!

The Palm Desktop has two users in it, however, the previous user and now my son. How can he wipe out the previous user and his information?

thanks again.

Steve

Windows or Mac?
Windows go into Palm Desktop and in the same area that you switch users click on edit users. Highlight the other person's name and click delete. It's been a while since I've run Palm Desktop on a Windows machine so if I'm missing something I'm sure someone will correct me.
Mac _Go to the Palm folder on your hard drive, open the users folder, drag the other persons folder into the trash. Or you can open Palm Desktop click users in the right hand corner of the toolbar, click edit users, choose the other guy's name and click delete.

I think it's pretty odd that someone would send a pda with all their information on it. Serious lack of foresight. I hope the person isn't that unintelligent all the time.

I think the seller had got it for his son or nephew, and seller wasn't too knowledgeable himself.. Seller had listed it on Ebay as a "Mindspring Visor" (!). So it didn't attract as much attention as other bids.

I can tell you the Prism does NOT act as a chick magnet in the adult world. Good luck in Jr. High though! :-)
