linux on my mac

How/where do I get a free version of linux (command line) that I can dual boot into on my mac? How do I set it up?

linuxppc.com is one of the most established, but Mandrake, SuSe, and Yellow Dog Linux all are geared for the mac.

I would recommend either LinuxPPC or YDL for a start. I have run LinuxPPC in the past and plan to reinstall at some point in the future again. It's great!

Is there a way to partition my hard drive without destroying my data? I have 4GB free and I would like to know if I can defrag the hard drive and then use the last 2 or 3GB for a separate partition.

I know you said free (they sell linux bundles dirt cheap), but these people have link to a great FAQ and other related linux sites. (got them from that Neal Stephenson essay, In the Beginning Was the Command Line). I've been considering putting linux on my laptop when I get my new computer.

You *might* be able to do it with FWB drivers, but the bottom line is, probably not.

Besides, it's a good thing to do once a year or so. It tends to remove wacky things from your system with a total clean install. On the bad side it takes forever to get all your apps back to where they were before....

Either that, or pull a HD from a junked computer. If you have IDE you can designate a slave drive as a Linux partition. This works great even for some macs that don't support second IDE drives with the MacOS, like my trusty PowerBase. You only really need a gig or so drive, you can always mount your mac drive within linux as shared data too.

BSD-M68K or something like that, it is out there... it only runs in command line I believe. X is too much for it to handle, but it should be fine otherwise.
