-- Differences between PalmOS 3.1 and 3.3 (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=635)

Question

Anyone out there able to elaborate on the differences between 3.1 and 3.3? When will the Visors come with 3.3?

Uhm... No. The current Visor's are Palm OS 3.1.

Actually, to be exact, the Visors have OS 3.1h, which is supposed to be code-optimized by Handspring engineers to reduce the excess wait states of the Dragonball cpu. This has been discussed before in a previous thread. (In a funny ironic way, because Handspring compensated for the speed improvement by increasing OUR wait states for the delivery of these machines ) What this means is that the Visor is faster than the Palm III which uses the same cpu.

Having upgraded my Palm III from OS 3.1 to 3.3 (which also reduces wait states, and streamlines the Hotsync process), I find that Hotsync times and apps in general perform noticeably faster, even though Benchmark still remains unchanged. However, I'm waiting for my Visor to arrive before I can compare the two side by side. So in answer to Zelig's second question, I don't think Visors will have (or need) an OS 3.3 upgrade path because the USB Hotsync is way faster, and the "h" version of 3.1 has the speed improvements of 3.3.

In addition to the faster HotSync-ing, 3.3 has built-in IR Hotsync support (something I would LOVE to see on the Visor) as well character support for the Euro currency (big whoop). Otherwise, there are no real advantages to it. I have it on my Palm Vx, and even with the Vx's faster processor it's still slower than a Visor.

Oh, and Jim, I believe color support is coming with PalmOS v3.5. Check out the Developer's Zone on Palm's website for more info. I think they're distributing the SDK's now.

The Euro symbol is also included on the modified 3.1 OS for the Visor (but not on the Palm version).
