Penny in Cigarette Lighter

A penny fell into my cigarette lighter in my car, and now I can't use it to plug in my cellphone (sorry...not a treo) or my ham radio...anyone know of a good way to get it out? I've tried a paper clip...

Ooh boy..I would say a magnet on a string. But, I claim no responsibility if ya mess up the lighter somehow. Not that I think you would, but you never know. Just making sure.

I don't believe a magnet would work, but that's a good general idea. Try tape/putty/gum/etc. on the end of a dowel/pen/pencil/etc.

That's what I was going to say.

...btw: everybody should have a gluestick in their toolbox for dipping screwdrivers in. it works incredibly well--better than a magnet.

A magnet will not work as a penny is mostly copper which is nonmagnetic. If it is flat (facing you) you could use a stick with tacky tape on it. If it has turned sideways(edge facing you) you can use insulated pliers to get it out. Hope that this helps.

Wow ...all this help in under 45 minutes!

These are good ideas, thanks! I will try the tape/silly putty on the end of a pencil, that seems like a good idea. It is facing down all the way in their, so plyers or anything of that sort would not work. I'd let you know what happens!

Actually, modern pennies are mostly zinc covered with a very thin layer of cooper (scratch one with a knife, you'll see)!

My vote would be for the non-conducting wooden pencil with non-conducting putty or double sided tape on the end.

Turn off the car, then depending on whether you always have power to the outlet or not, use that trusty paperclip if you can.

If all else fails, it is usually possible to remove the outlet.

Nonsense! Do you know what a penny is worth? Why, with 10-10-666 you can dial anyone on the planet and talk as long as you wish for $.01!*

Lightbulb Use a dowel and some epoxy.

Use a pencil or dowel with a dab of some thick epoxy on the end. Touch it to the penny and let it sit until well set. They come right out!

Use patience!

Rather than worry about shorting anything out, either remove the fuse for the lighter or unhook the negative terminal on the car's battery.

I'd just turn the car upside down and shake it out. You might find some more change in the seat cushions too.

Super Glue on the end of a dowel or pencil.

If you're real serious about getting it out and the glue and dowels and pliers and shaking don't seem to work, there's only one alternative - dynamite.

isn't C4 somewhat sticky / tacky? If'n you cram enough into the lighter maybe that'll pull the penny right out!
