I've just downloaded the noah dictionary, which has a pdb file that is over 5 megs. Needless to say I don't have that much free on my BVDx, ahh but this is a good excuse to get the 8mb flash, but i wanted to know if anyone has tried this combination yet? I'd hate to get it and find out i was unsuccessful. Though I could always use the flash module for other things...

ps I'm also worried about the 8 meg module in general, does anyone have any horror stories, or incompatabilties they'd like to share? I searched the archives but the lists are kind of short, i was hoping for updates.

I felt the same as you untill i saw that
noah has just release 3 smaller dict. files, i just loaded it on my visor and tested it last nite, it is really cool. i put on the small dict (1.3 megs) but will probably go to the midium size (1.8 megs)

(This is a copy of a message I posted on another site. the discussion was "visor memory upgrade".)

Actually, the Visor Deluxe comes with 8MB. Handspring also offers a 8MB Flash Module, which will give you 16MB, BUT it should only be used for data that you do not modify on a fairly regular basis. When you HotSync, you don't actually 'talk' to the FM. Thats why you are not able to keep database information such as Address Book on the FM you constantly update it on either the Visor or the desktop. (You COULD have the address information as a read-only *backup* there.) Think of it just like a Zip disk removable storage. (Applications/files are moved to the FM by a program called FileMover includes with the FM.)
Its GREAT for storing large documents that you may need to frequently access, but dont want to take up your valuable internal memory. (If the FM data needs to be updated, it must be put on the actual Visor first, then moved over again using FileMover.)

I personally use the FM for e-books from www.peanutpress.com and loads of fan fiction (Word and text files) Im a reader, and I like using the Visor for the normal PDA stuff, and keeping my reading material on the Flash module.

Others can give you more information on what applications will/will not work on the FM the only one Ive tried is the Peanut Press Reader. When the module was not in the Springboard slot, the application did not list on my screen, but as soon as the module was inserted, the screen updated to include it.

Thumbs up

I thought about this too. It'd be really cool
to have a dictionary this big in just one
module.

Please let us know if you try and if it works! ..

Maybe you can work it out with the developer.
He's on sourceforge, isn't he?

The 1.3MB Wordnet_small database and Noah work fine from my 8MB Flash Module.

The WordSleuth thesaurus from Landware also works fine from the Flash Module.

I'm waiting for the Merriam Webster dictionary module. But it's just software -- and mostly data, not code -- so it's pretty hard to fathom what the delay is. If it costs under $40.00 (the price is TBA), this would be a great alternative to buying a flash module or cluttering up the Visor's main RAM.

Gameboy70,
Could you give me some more info about the module? Do they have a website where I can get some details about it?

TIA,

The MW module can be found at www.landware.com under the Handspring products selection.

I'm happy to say I have the Noah full dictionary running quite nicely on my 8 meg module.
