Newbie question: Is there a difference between having 2 Backup Modules (one to keep at home and one to carry with the visor) vs. Backup Buddy? I am doing a trial run on back-up buddy and the syncing takes an hour and the restore took at least 4 hours (I went to bed as it took so long). What am I doing wrong or why do I need this well liked program?

BB takes only a few minutes for me. Dont use the
default hotsync connection. Instead created a new
"US/Serial to PC" connection and set the speed to
230,400bps. The default one is set a 57,600pbs.

The default connection should not take anywhere near an hour! Check your speed setting! Also, are you using serial or USB? Serial is somewhat slower, but nowhere near that bad!

To answer your question about "what's the difference....":

The biggest difference is that you have to remember to use your backup modules. BB is awesome because it's always there.

I use the backup module and have restored from it several times without incident. I do not have Backup Buddy.

Of course, I am very anal-retentive about using the module--I usually back up once in the morning and one in the afternoon for good measure.

I think the idea about a "rotating" module system is excellent in case of a failure on one. Maybe rotate them by day, that way if one messes up, you have only lost a days worth of stuff.

(I assume, of course, that everyone backs up as frequently as I. )

However, I would NOT recommend keeping the backup module with (read: in) the Visor with any permanence or great length of time. Keep it in a safe place away from the unit. It's one thing to restore info on a crashed Visor. It's entirely different if you lose the Visor or it is physically broken. In either of those cases, IF the backup module is in the Visor, guess what? In the case of breakage, you risk breaking the module; in the case of theft or loss, the backup module goes away too. Back it up often, but KEEP THAT MODULE OUT OF THE VISOR until needed. In a safe place. Away from the Visor.

Depends on if your away from your Desktop frequently. If I'm on the road or just away from my desktop a lot I make sure to take by backup module with me. That way if my deluxe goes into bizaro world, I'm can restore on the spot.

I guess it just depends on your restore needs.

Thanks for all of the advice and help on this. I will adjust the settings to try back-up buddy for a bit longer. I will also consider buying a second backup module as I am anal about backing up every morning. I am a sales rep and do not work in an office so I am on the desktop once every day or other day now that I have the Visor. I don't keep the back-up module in the visor but keep it in sealed pouch in my handbag that would only fail if it was stolen or corrupt so this may work for me.

Backup accident

This happened to me just 2 days ago.

I was performing a backup with the backup-module (previous backup was 1 month ago) and my Visor crashed! After that I couldn't get the Visor to boot up. It just was stuck on the Palm OS screen you get when you reset.

I called HS support, and the only way out was a hard reset! I did that and the Visor did work again, but unfortunately the backup module was empty because it didn't backup properly. Therefore, I lost all my stuff! Fortunately for me I just hotsynced my data before backing up, so my data was there, but I lost most of my programs.

THE POSSIBLE CAUSE: My batteries were low!
I think the Visor was running out of juice during the backup, so it just crashed. When I got the Visor working again, I immediately replaced the batteries and tried my best to restore everything.

LESSON LEARNED: Make sure your batteries have enough power before you use the backup module or hotsync....or you may lose your data!

It was a bummer to lose some of my games. :-(
