Thumbs up

Hey guys, I just downloaded the trial version of the software you can run on your PC to create OmniRemote buttons and screens. It's called ORDesktop and you can get it here: http://www.ordesktop.com/index.htm. Man does this software make putting cool interfaces together easy! Not only that, but it imports button commands from the Pronto programmable remote, which is cool because there are TONS of files out there for it. Check out this link on Remote Central for instance: http://www.remotecentral.com/files/main.htm!

Anyway, This has shed a new light on the OmniRemote springboard for me and I think I will actually break down and buy it now (I've tried internal IR and it's not too hot). Just thought I'd share.

Dave

Has ANYONE out there bought the OmniRemote module? I'm really curious. Seems like a great idea in theory....

How's the distance on the IR? The angle necessary? What about battery life?

Thanks. I want to buy one, hell, they're only $60, but I need some user feedback, first.

Best,
James.

You might want to check out Remote Central. If you go there and click on the PDA chat forum, there's lots of discussions from owners of the visor/omniremote SB. I've seen discussions there regarding your exact questions.

I have the registered software (not the springboard), and love it...

I have a colleague at my college who teaches choir/piano/composition in the Fine Arts division who has a Visor with an OmniRemote. He uses it all the time to control the various recording and playback devices he has in his office. Plus, we just opened a new classroom building with lots of multimedia classrooms and he can use the OmniRemote to control those too, rather than hunt around for the various remote controls for VCR, document camera, computer projector, etc. (Those remotes have a tendency to walk off with the professor who was in the class prior to you...)

I've got one. Controls all the A/V equipment in my house and the CD player in my truck.

I use mine from across the living room with no problem, so it's at least ~20 feet. The angle depends on the sensitivity of the device. My VCR in the living room is picky, but it's picky with the remote that came with it, so it's not the Omni's fault. Battery life isn't really a major impact for me, but I don't tend to do lots of channel surfing, so I might not be a good example.
