-- Other colors for Prism? New Palm OS? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11907)
Does anybody know, if and when Handspring is planning to offer other colors for the Prism? I would like to buy one, but to be honest, I think the cobalt blue sucks.
What about the Palm OS? Will there be an updated Palm OS in the near future, for which one should better wait?
thx,
Alex
Since 4.0 is due so soon, I'd wait to see what it brings.
OS 4.0 brings nothing.. I rememebr reading in a recent article.. (I think that is was the brighthand one) that Palm will let it's licences (Hand, TRG, Sony etc..) do the REAL developing.. (like 16 bit color.. expansion) and than they will include that in the new versions of Palm.. So OS 4.0 will jsut be 3.5.2h2

PalmOS 4 sucks!!!
I've been playing with OS 4 for the past hour or so, and frankly...IT SUCKS!!!!
Seriously, there is NOTHING new here at all! I had expected some slight improvements to the built-in PIM apps or even a new email program (especially since Palm recently acquired MultiMail). But there is nothing..nada..zip...zilch! It's just OS 3.5 with a new boot up screen, "about" logo, and new calculator app.
I knew that this was going to be a minor upgrade, but...OS4 is the Windows ME of handhelds!

I just don't get this need for color variety in hardware. If it does what you need, get it. Mac users always raved about their system's technical superiority, and rightly so, but It seems that Apple's lasting legacy will be to make people care more about the color of their computer than the content.
An regarding the OS. If Palm OS 4.0 sucks, and it is basically the same as Palm OS 3.5, then does 3.5 suck too?
What are you running OS 4 on? I know it's been avaiable for awhile in teh deve pavilian.. so..
ALSO Tell me more about the new calc app - email me.. I'll tell you why in the responce.

When I first heard of the name for Handspring's color Palm Pilot, the "Prism", my first thought was it would have a "clear" - "prismatic" light refracting/reflecting casing, so when it was in the sunlight it would cast rainbows like a real prism or a crystal.. too bad they didn't do that, I think that would have looked REALLY COOL. Or even if the case had a "prismatic" "hologram" like quality to the case. Not practical, but really cool. Maybe someday a special edition will..

I recently read about a study done here in Europe about mobile phones. Do you know what the major purchasing decision for a mobile phone is?
Its the design and color of it, not the technical features (which 90% are not used anyway, like with VCRs)
However, for me, both counts: the content/functionality AND design. And I dont understand, why you can not choose between different colors for the high end Prism, when you can do it for the low end Visor??
Alex
I don't get it in cell-phones either. Don't get me wrong, the "design" is extremely important, even on the surface the design determines the user-friendliness. I just don't think the cases "color" contributes anything. I don't need my cellphone to match my book-bag. I'd rather Handpsring concentrate on improving the design and functionality of the Prism then spending time with focus groups to determine what colors people like best.
Color is important
Color is important! That's probably why Mr. Ford had to expand from his "any color as long as it's black" strategy. I would have bought my Prism if it was some neo-colored eye sore. Or if I did I'd have to take it out to the wood shop and make a veneer faceplate for it. Which I may do with the Cobalt blue. Hmmm, did I just contradict my own point? It's gonna be a long day!

My wife bought me a pair of Motorola Talkabouts for Christmas. They were the top of the line version and I had been wanting them for a long time, but I never imagined them in anything but black. When my wife presented me with purple ones, I didn't know quite what to say. I still use them, but I would definitely use them with more confidence if they were black and not purple.
Bottom line is functionality is still the highest priority, but appearance needs to be factored in there somewhere.

the color doesn't matter
I really could care less what color my visor is. Blue is fine. Its the colors on the screen that matter.
And, maybe someday there will be more than a handful of programs that can actually use the 65K colors!
Cobalt Blue
I just received my Prism that I ordered. I love it. When I was researching for the type or brand of PDA I was reading everything and trying everything I could get my hands on for a month.
One of the original detractors in the beginning, once I decided what type of modules or add on features I was going to use, was wether I wanted color or not, the ability to easily upgrade the OS, and sadly the attractability. Not the attractability for others but for me. I figured if I was going to drop nearly $500 I should like the way it looked. At first I wasn't to keen on the "cobalt" blue color, as compared to the look of the Palm Vx, but the features of the Prism outweighed that on the pro con chart heavily between the two.
Now I have my Prism, and to be honest, I really like the color. It doesn't even look like the one in the store to me...I like the color and am very happy with it. Normally, I am very very conservative, but I do like the way the Prism looks. I do like the graphite color of the Palm Vx, but I prefer the individualism of the Prism.
Get one you'll like it!!!

We are talking about the color of the case, right? The past few replies, I think, were about the color display. Oh well. And to whoever asked, I heard about people being able to find OS 4 for download (perhaps it was a emulator file) and flashing it onto their palm (I've only heard people do it on the Vx, but maybe others could too.)
I'd love a Prism that was a deep rich red-violet.
Say "magenta4" or "dark magenta" on this chart: http://users.rcn.com/giant.interpor...rSpecifier.html

Re: Cobalt Blue
Did you ever have the chance to compare you Prism against the Vdx?? I wonder if the Prism blue is much different/looks better than the VDx blue????

But from what I have seen, there doesn't seem to be ANY cosmetic difference between OS 3.5 and 4. Most of the improvements lie in the "plumbing". Support for networking standards and so on. But I don't think many Palm users are going to find a compelling reason to pay $20 for this "upgrade".
