-- Rechargeable Visor? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=36)
Does anybody know if there are plans for a rechargeable Visor, like the Plam V?
Also for the Palm V users, how long does a typical charge last compared to AA bateries?
Actually, I was relieved that the Visor *wasn't* rechargeable. The Palm V can be problematic if you're going to be away from your cradle for a long time, such as an extended trip. You have to purchase an extra-cost recharging kit in that situation.
I use NiMH rechargeables on my Palm IIIx; that keeps the costs down, and I can toss in a couple of alkalines if I'm on the road without my charger.
By the way, if you're looking for NiMH batteries and a recharger, check out http://www.nimhbattery.com/
Don't get NiCADs or rechargeable alkalines, as you typically find locally. They won't last nearly as long in a PDA, and they give you very little warning before dying.
I understand that one of the resons that they did not add a rechagable option for pricing reasons. It was a major objective to keep the price below $250.
That http://www.nimhbattery.com looks like a good deal. I'm going to get one of their Solar NiMH chargers.
Battery Shack used to have 720 mAh AAA's at http://www.batteryshack.com/batteries.html. I don't see them there now. I bought some of the 720's a while back and they work great. (The highest I saw on nimhbattery.com was 600 mAh.)
I keep expecting to see a springboard that serves as a rechargable battery. I can't tell whether this is impossible from the developer's kit but it seems like something that should have been planned in. I'd buy one for for say $20.
Err...remember the Springboard can only accomodate ONE module, so if you put a battery, you';; have to lose the rest !
Well, yes, but for $20 I could afford to have a module that I don't use all the time. A battery might also be a module that could pass through all of the other connections allowing another module to piggy back on. The InnoGear MP3 player would be a nice one to have such a system for. Also there are some provisions for charging rechagable springboards, I certainly hope that the individual springboards include a provision for charging them without leaving the Visor on the cradle with the module. While I wouldn't worry too much about it for one module, if one has two rechargable springboards this could be a real pain in the neck.
Actually, I dont remember what site I read it on, but it quoted Jeff Hawkins as saying that there would be a cradle coming out next year that would make the Visor rechargable. My guess is that it would allow you to use rechargable alkaline batteries.
Personally, I like being able to just pop in a pair of AAAs specially since its not always convenient have a cradle around.
