Red face

I thought I was amune to the cracking springboard slot. I have had my IVD since December and I looked at it today. Sure enough it is cracked!

I am going to call Handspring right now.

Follow up to my last post.

The CS rep rold me that this is not a common problem. He said he has not heard of the problem too much? I find that hard to beleive. Anyway, they are sending me a new Visor. I asked if one color is better than another, and they said they are all the same.

So I am going to stick with the ICE Visor.

The great thing is I thought customer service was excellent. They responded quickly with very little wait time.

I have the same problem (Springboard chipping) along with severe cracking around the power button, all the way to the microphone. I called Customer Service and my replacement Visor will be here in two weeks.

Kemp,

did they also tell you that this problem is not common?

Just my 2 cents worth...

Since my IVDx has been performing flawlessly for the five weeks I've had it, I've decided to live with the small crack my cover slot has developed. To prevent it from breaking off totally, I've affixed a piece of clear tape to it inside the Springboard slot.

My reasoning is this... I'm not willing to give up a perfectly functioning unit for a rather small cosmetic defect, especially when there's a good chance the replacement will be a "reconditioned" unit as opposed to new.

I'm also not using the hard cover any longer and have no plans to use a Handspring case with the "sewn-in attachment device" so I do not think the problem will get any worse.

I don't 100% disagree with you, except from everything I read, the crack will worsen. In addition I do use the Handspring case. The will send you a new Visor before you send yours in so, if you don't like what you get as a replacement, it's not a big deal to keep your cracked one. In addition, according to the person I spoke to on the phone they will back thier product 100% and they will replace the new one if their is a problem again.

Good luck, I hope your crack does not get worse.

Question

I have two questions:

1) Does the cracking occur in the front or rear of the case? i.e. is it due to using the shield or from placing the shield on the back of the unit?

2) Would not using the Handspring case prevent this from happening?

The cracking occurs in the rear of the visor. If you look at the top of the Visor with the spring board insert in place, there is a little ridge between the spring board cover and the actuall Visor. The ridge is what is cracked.

I am not sure about the answer to your second question. I am currently using the Visor case from handspring. That may be when the problem started, however, I am not going to stop using the case. Afterall I did get the case from HS and they should stand by their product 100%.

I think they do too.

Have any of you folks tried the Palmglove case with your Visor. I have had my Visor since October as well as the Palmglove and have not had that problem. I have never used the cover that came with my Visor.

Cool

I thought I was immune to case cracking, too...until I removed Springboard cover today. So far it's minor, and I can live with it. Like MarkEagle, I don't want to replace with another unit since my IVDx works beautifully otherwise. I guess I'll call HS when it completely comes off or something. My case is HS case so I'll see if it gets worse.

BTW the cracking looks & seems "internal" (I can't feel it with my finger on the surface) and I think they would be invisible if it was Graphite.

If the case is starting to crack, you know it is only going to get worse-- not any better.

I just ordered a replacement visor for several reasons, one of which was the crack at the top. From what I saw, it happenes when the included hard cover goes back too far, past the notch, and pushes forward. I may buy a Handspring Premium Case to correct this flaw, anybody have any problems with cracking and the premium cases?

PS--My friend cracked his screen, and they said that he acutally got a NEW visor, mabee they are doing this to correct a manufacturing flaw?

I have the premimum case, and that is what may have caused the crack. When I get my replacement, I will probably still use the case. I will keep on sending the Visor back if the problem keeps on happening.

DON'T USE THE HS CASES!!!

I too had the cracking problem, had a beautiful bright analine case from handspring, sent the visor back and promptly got a brand new one.

I thought "ahhh a new visor, I'm not going to let this one get cracked." I very carefully mounted it in the Handspring case and left it sitting in my office for 3 hours. Came back and took it out(carefully) to hotsynch... and a crack was already beginning to develop!!! It seems just the stress on the plastic notch caused by the case (pulling backwards) was enough to cause a stress fracture.

I will not use this case ever again and I do not use the plastic cover. I ordered a EB Slipper.

DON'T USE THE CASES FROM HANDSPRING

I have an IVD. I have had the same problems with the ridge near the springboard slot cracking too. I occasionally put the factory cover on in a reversed fashion with it clipped to the back of the visor. I belive that this might be the cause of the crack. I don't have an ordered case from HS, but it sounds like the cases hold the visor in place by the same method. By reading the posts about the HS cases, this confirms that theory. I would guess that if you don't use the HS cases that use that ridge to hold the visor, and if you don't reverse the hard-cover, you should avoid any cracking. I called HS and expect a replacment in 1-0 to 14 days, and have also ordered the EB slipper.

Talking

I have a VDX in Blue. I don't have an external case, but I store the front cover by snapping it on the back. I have a small chip that broke off of the plastic overlay (that forms the ledge that the cover catches on) It is about 1/8th inch long, and the fact that it is missing doesn't affect the performance at all.

I have looked closely at my case, and there are no other cracks in it. I'm going to stick with my current unit. I have no, repeat, -- NO -- problems with my Visor. So, I guess that I will have to see.

I am glad that HS is standing behind their units. That is the key to success in the marketplace. Good customer service (all right, in spite of the startup problems.)

I just received my replacement today. It is like Brand new. It only took HS a few days to send me a new one. An yes I will still use my case.
