-- Modem and email Questions (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=12732)
I'm pretty handy with my Visor Dlx. I've got lots of useful programs on it.
Now I want to move into communications. I guess there are two topics:
A. Lotus Notes Email via syncing. I understand the concept, but have not tried it. You synch email back and forth from the Visor to the PC/laptop, and then send the email from the PC/laptop when connected to the company network or your ISP. (Kinda like working in a local replica of Notes mail).
Questions:
1. What is the best way to use Lotus Notes emails? I get dozens of emails daily, (some junk, of course!) and some with large embedded files. How do I selectively transfer the ones I want to keep to the Visor?
2. My personal email is AOL (I know, I know... our family uses it because my kids like to IM with their buddies.) What AOL products are there to copy email to the Visor?
B. Email and web via Modem (wired or wireless). OK, now say I want to do the above real-time, i.e. not wait for synching to/from laptop/PC and from laptop/PC to network/internet.
Questions:
3. Is there anyway to use our corporate VPN as an ISP from the Visor? Could you then get into the corporate network to get your Lotus Notes emails?
4. Can I dial into AOL via a Visor modem?
5. Can you get to other ISPs from a Visor modem (we have our AOL account on a cable modem account, so it costs $2.50 each time I dial-up to AOL's server using AOL as an ISP).
6. Any recommendations for a Visor Springboard modem (wired or wireless)?
Many thanks in advance
Steve
I'll try to answe as many as I can:
2. I don't recall what its called but their is a program that sells for about $20 and its able to go on AOL, send all your E-mail to Outlook, and from there it could synch using the built in conduit. Its a hassle.
3. Theres a company called V-One that has a VPN client for Palm OS, really don't know much about it.
4. You can dial into AOL with a modem for mail & Instant Messenger, no web browsing or access to AOL's other content (Which is 95% ads anyways).
5. I'm not exactly sure what your asking here. The Vissor's modem supports practically every dial-up ISP. If your asking if you can access AOL stuff over another ISP (Like you do with your cable modem) then the answer is only Instant Messenger, you can't do it with mail.
6. For Modem I'd say look at some of the recent postings. Go with an original ThinModem if you want small, easy, & cheap. Go with Xircom if you want external batteries and/or want to hook it up to a GSM phone. If your willing to spend the cash, go for a ThinModem+ with its 8mb of memory.

Not sure about VPN but i have some recent experience with the rest. You can only do mail and buddy lists on AOL and you must use their Anywhere software, works well. On ISPs, i had to find a local ISP with a plain dialup, not proprietary software, i ended up with Bellsouth.net, works great. I'm using the Thinmodem+,wired, happy camper.

I forgot about AOL Mail being accessed that way (Been a while since I used AOL).
As for the connection, sounds to me like hes already on the TCP/IP accounts and thats why he would be charged $2.50 each time he dials up, he also says he has a "cable modem account".
