Screen Protectors

I don't get what is the big deal with screen protectors on the market. After surfing around on the available protectors, I came to realize that the whole idea of spending $10 to $30 dollars for disposable non-scratchproof pieces of plastic is a bummer.

I made my own screen protector by cutting an acetate plastic sheet to size and inserting it between the screen and my Visor Platinum case. The plastic sheet I used is the smooth clear one that is used for photocopying machines and not for inkjet printers (these are rough on one side and would darken a monochrome screen or polarize a colored screen).

I cut the sheet equivalent to the length of my Platinum screen but a millimeter or two wider. It was easy to pop into place. I did not need to clean immaculately the screen and of course no bubbles formed (notorious on the vinyl stick on protectors).

I performed several operations including writing three paragraphs of notes and I almost can't tell the difference from the no-protection screen. Now, I can easily pop my protector out if it needs cleaning (fingerprints are not a problem at all) or if it needs replacing (depends on the amount of use but I believe it is similar to the Writerights protectors).

So, I say, keep your money or buy some more useful accessory or software.

Been there, done that. This idea works, as does the home-made cut vinyl version adhered with a thin film of water.

There are a lot of 'home remedy' solutions- but there are also a lot of different kinds of users. I disliked the feel of the acetate screens as they wore and I found I was replacing them a lot- the Grafitti area was especially annoying for me. I had similar problems with a Mylar version of the 'sip-in' screen idea.

The home-made vinyl sheet worked OK, but cutting the dang things and getting them positioned without dust or air bubbles got too annoying, especially for the, to me, 'awkward' feel they had on my styli.

I have been using the Brando screen protector now for a couple months and have very few problems. It is neatly in place and I can forget about it and go on enjoying my Visor!

Right there with you Madkins. I messed around with various home-made screen protectors for years. Now I'm totally sold on the Brando.

Another vote for Brando! I used NuShield prior to that.

Here! Here! Brando gets a fourth vote. My opinion: Fellowes Writerights stink - the clear ones for color and the anti-glare type. I like the way the stylus feels on the Brando, and the screen clarity is almost perfect, with no air bubbles!

Yeah, you're right Homer- If I'm going to mention it, I should have said what it was!

The Brando Screen Protector is a piece of self-adhesive plastic (vinyl?) film with an adhesive that allows it to be washed and re-used. It runs about $12.95 EACH from www.brando.com.hk. The quality is so high that the seemingly high price still makes it an excellent value!

After a couple months of use, the surface of mine shows a very mild 'dulling', but no hazing, scratches, or other marks. I have washed it and reapplied it a few times now and it has so far always re-adhered as if new.

There is a bit of a trick to washing it, however, since the sticky side both attracts and strongly holds on to dust, lint, and other debris.

The trick to washing seems to be to keep track of the 'sticky side' and make sure it does not touch ANYTHING that may have lint or dust on it. Air dry that side- maybe use a couple puffs o fcompressed air to help it along, and make sure the screen in 100% clean and lint-free before applying. When washing, use a lot of soap and water to remove dirts, oils, and dust from the stick-um.
