Well, unfortunately I had my BVD with me in the men's room in my office building. I set it down to wash my hands, got distracted while drying them and forgot it. I realized it about ten minutes later and it was already gone.

One would like to think that in a professional office building the people would have morals.

Well, now I need to save my money to replace it. I lost it yesterday and am already going insane without it.

I wonder if HS has a database of serial numbers for known stolen Visors?

I hope you had all your senstive information under password protection.
And you remembered to turn the protection on.

I use a program called SafeHack which automatically turns on password protection when the unit is powered down.

Fortunately, I didn't have anything too sensitive in it. I was getting ready to start putting more sensitive data into it in the coming month.

I'd also suggest investigating locking programs such as JotLoc, TealLock, etc. I use JotLoc. It shows the Owner Information after the timeout period. Handy! Haven't misplaced mine yet.

But even so, someone can just hard reset it and have a empty Visor.

Boy... Does that suck!!!

Don't know how long ago you bought it but keep in mind that most credit card companys have stolen item insurence. You should call them and may have to file a police report but if they do they will credit your account.

At the risk of sounding silly, did you ask around? Maybe check with building security or such? Just a thought to try to restore your faith in humanity.

Sorry, my faith in my fellow humans is pretty low at this point. I put up a note in the restroom where is was lost. I also asked the receptionists in the other offices.

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there with no morales.

You know, it just occurred to me that the same technology that makes a GPS work can be used as a "locator." Similar to how LoJacks work in cars. It'd be GREAT if a Visor could have that sort of technology hardwired on the board. But, ultimately it does come down to a cost vs. need issue. Sure, your visor deluxe isn't exactly cheap at $280 or so, but the thing is - it IS a consumer electronics device. What makes the visor precious isn't the visor itself, it's your information on it. This whole sordid affair is an excellent argument for regular backups and good security habits (always password locking your visor when you turn it off!)

Still, you have my sympathies - I'd go nuts if mine was stolen.

Now if you had the wireless modem PCMCIA ...that would be perfect! Or if wireless interent planned for the Palms also gets installed in laptops...

The laptop-protection software actually had a pretty good backup for the 'if the modem isn't connected' scenario.

The proposed backup plan was to bring up a screen that basically said, 'Please connect the modem to reload your password'. Basically, the assumption was that crooks aren't too smart, so a good portion of them would do just that.

My ancient TI Travel Mate had a password utility. It wouldnt even access the floppy till a correct password was put in. 3 strikes and it was locked up forever, unless you really wanted to crack the case, reset the jumper.... problem was the jumper was in a bank of 8 UNLABELED jumpers, under the HD.

Well, it's been about 10 weeks, and I finally replaced my BVD.

It's been difficult. I had grown so accustom to having it, with all it's information.

Now I only have to get the new one configured to match the old one. (I've changed jobs in the mean time and resynching with the old setup probably doesn't make too much sense now.)

It's great to be among the living and "organized" again. ;-)

Very sorry to hear of your loss... maybe to restore everyone's faith a bit, I once lost my Palm Vx in a snowbank in (don't ask) Montr�al. The person who found it e-mailed everyone in my address book to try & find whose it was, and even phoned a few of them. He refused payment for the LD charges, and for shipping to send it back to me in Toronto. I wish you could have the same kind of story to tell!

Of course, this time, maybe you'll buy insurance. To cover my palm & accessories for $800, it costs me only about $10 a year, and is worth so much more in peace of mind. My cell phone is covered for just $4 a year.

Just ask your insurance broker about adding a "floater" to your renters/home owners insurance - it's well worth it (and ZERO deduct')

Well, it would be covered by my homeowners policy, except I have a $500.00 deductible. :-(
