[EDIT] Since the threads were merged my post no longer makes sense.

I bet everybody here got that e-mail. Also please don't double post, we are smart enough to find your thread if it interests us.

Since when do prices go UP instead of down on Palm-related stuff? I wonder if sales are going so great for Handspring that they feel they can raise the price and keep sales brisk.

I actually don't mind the price increase. I got my treo for $399 (VP upgrade), so bigger prices mean better resale value for me later on Ebay.

The polite thing would have been to send me
email if this bothered you so much.

Only double posting bothers me. I think it is fine to post something like this, it even became a news item. Just when I see a double post it sets me off.

No need to single out Apple here. NEC, IBM, and several others have jumped on Apple's heels by announcing price increases as well.

Even Dell has been hit by all this, evidently. ARS, Inc. reported Friday that Dell has raised upgrade pricing for RAM, showing "that even the largest vendors will not be spared from this issue." The report also notes that "Dell attempts to hide the fact that its memory prices are going up by continuing to configure base systems with 128MB of RAM, well below Microsoft's recommendation for Windows XP." Slick PR move, but an increase in the bottom line for the average consumer nonetheless.

The fact of the matter is that if you're buying a tech device anytime soon, you'd better get used to the idea of paying a little more for it. I think this is going to be a trend for a little while.

Nope. No need at all. It was just timely (and there are marked similarities betwixt Apple and Handspring). No need to be so sensitive to good natured ribbing of a company just because you work for them (directly or otherwise). I'm sure that Handspring had about as much choice as Apple did.

Given some posts that you've made in the past, I don't think you should be lecturing anyone on politeness.

my thoughts exactly.

to verify - is this only affecting treos bought WITHOUT a service plan? that if you buy a service plan, it is still $399?

In general, yes, but not always. Examples would include technologies where there aren't a lot of suppliers and exact demand estimations aren't possible (DRAM and LCD screens fall under this).

Merged the 2 threads.... everybody happy now?

Actually I should merge it with this thread too...

What gets me about this is that I already have a phone service plan (VoiceStream). So I would have to pay extra because I'm already paying for phone service... doesn't make me want to buy a Treo. Not that I want to buy one anyway, until they sell for under $200.
