-- Cranky Platinum power button? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=11311)

Posted by frankp on 01-30-2001 05:13 PM:

My platinum power button has just gotten very finicky. I have to make sure that I press in the very center of the button, and quite firmly. Until this developed I could casually tap the button, now it seems like I have to conciously press it. My Deluxe had developed the same syndrome, but only after a year. The Platinum's only a month old. Is this a common complaint or am I being hyper-sensitive to my power button's lack of sensitivity?

I haven't actiually look inside my platinum, but most devices with buttons have a contact area that is closed (shorted) when the button is pressed down onto it. It could be that you've worn the contact area. One fix often recommended to remote control users (where button failure is common due to excessive use) is to get some conductive paint (sold at auto supply stores for fixing window defogger tracings), open your visor, and "freshen up" the contact area by carefully repainting where PC board traces might have worn off. Make sure you let it dry thoroughly before reassembling your Visor.

Another approach, if you haven't had your platinum very long, is to call Handspring, complain, and ask for a replacement. My Platinum is not showing any button failure, so you may have just gotten a bad one.
