-- smoothing stylus tips? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=16004)

Question

I know this is kind of a silly question, but I was wondering if anyone had a neat little technique for smoothing the plastic stylus tips at all? I didn't like the rough feel of the stock Visor Stylus, and didn't want the feather light Pentopia Chameleon Visor stylus (though I wanted a silo-fitting pen stylus). I liked the similar form factor of the City Stylus, so purchased it. I finally got it today (long wait from HK...), and am a little disappointed in the stylus tip. It is better than the stock stylus, but not as smooth as my beloved Pentopia 2+1. Anyone know any kind of way to smooth the stylus tip a little?

I use the "Walmart thin plastic" method of screen protection, so I am not worried about it scratching my screen. It's just that I would like it to glide across the screen a little more smoothly I guess....

Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest you put your stylus at the end of an electric driller and use very thin sand paper (800 dots per cm)to polish it. Then you can use some silicon spray both on the screen and your stylus tip to lubricate both of them.

Interesting idea. I had thought about using a buffer to help, but I hadn't thought about silicon spray - sounds like it would do the trick (though I would just spray the tip, not the screen). Where would I find something like this silicon spray?

I'm in France, and I usually find it in all good hardware stores.

I also use it on the screen to protect it against potential scratches.

A small grain Wet Sandpaper will always work better with Plastic. I don't know why, but the Wet Sandpaper seems to do a better job smoothing things. the dry sandpaper just scratches things up. You can get 3M sandpaper, (which by the way is made my our favorite Minnesota Company, Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing) like anywhere in the world. so.. A buffer and wet sandpaper would do it for me..

I think I am gonna try the bufer/silicon spray approach first. This stylus that I am working on (City Stylus) is only available from HK, and took me forever to get. I don't want to take any big chances on screwing it up....

Now I gotta figure out how to fill in the barrel around the pen tube to make it a little heavier....

Exclamation Walmart Style Screen Protector

I remember a discussion a while ago about a thin vinyl sheet that you can get a Walmart - dirt cheap. I went searching through the fabric section and everyone looked at me like I was crazy.

What's it used for (originally)?

What section of the store would I find it in?

Is it sold by the roll, yard, sheet?

Thanks,
jr

(I have the window applique type that you get from staples for inkjet printers - but it's a pain because you have to "steam" off the coating that the ink is supposed to stick to...)

It is in the fabric section. Look for the long, open fabric rolls. The rolls of fabric that are being referred too are the ones that are sold by the yard and that a service person usually cuts for you. There should be a couple of different rolls of vinyl. Get the thinnest you can find. I think it's typical use is to cover furniture to protect the finish or fabric.
