-- why does my 'home' always bring me to that basic screen? (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=17174)
why does my 'home' always bring me to that basic screen?
Can anyone tell me why whenever I exit an app, I always get brought to that really basic basic 'home' screen where I have to tap on 'Applications' in order to get to the real 'home' menu?
thanks!
I don't quite understand your problem. When you click home, you get to a pre - palm launcher stage?
try doing a soft-reset..

Normally, you don't "exit" from a "File/Exit" or "Quit" control or menu option. You leave an application by tapping the Home silk button (looks like a house) that lets you pick a different app. (The "Home" screen is most often referred to as the Launcher.) This method of leaving apps and switching immediately to another (while usually leaving the previous app in whatever state it was in) is a basic behavior of the PalmOS.
Are you maybe using SilverScreen or some other Launcher replacement?
I've been having the same problem. If I hit the home button, it takes to a screen where I have to hit the Applications icon to get the screen I expect. Unfortunately, I don't remember what I may have changed to cause this... Soft reset didn't fix this.
Let me explain further:
Let's say I hit the contact button, pull up my phone numbers, then tap the 'Home' (house icon) to exit.
This returns me to a different screen. The Time & Battery are on the bottom instead of on top. And I have a new icon on my screen, called 'Applications' which, when I tap it, takes me back to the normal 'home' screen that we all know and love.
Also, they are no longer in any of the categories I've placed them into. Its an 'ALL' view, but there is not category that they've been sorted by...
Hmm do you have a 3rd party launcher on your Visor like Laumchem??? This might be set as the default???
Nope, brand new Platinum out of the box today. Totally fresh, no 3rd party anything.
The thing that has me puzzled is that the battery symbol appears on the bottom of the screen. The only place I have seen that is in 3rd party apps.?????? Heres a longshot maybe the OS is corrupt?? Have you tried installing the 3.1h patch???
I had this problem in relation to my Minstrel Modem with YadaYada service. When I first installed the modem (insert it for the first time) it asks if you want to use YadaYada's launcher or stick to Palm's launcher. If you chose YadaYada's and then removed the modem (removing the launcher along with the module), you'd get the problem you were describing. It would seem that something 'detached' the Home icon from the 'Applications' launcher and 'retached' it to the proprietary launcher. When the proprietary launcher is no longer present or not working, it defaults to this non-launcher-launcher. For me, choosing to keep Palm's launcher the default prevented this from happening again.
Sooooo . . . Have you at all used any 3rd party launchers ever? Have you removed them, toyed with them, or done anything at all with them? If so, then this is probably what's causing your problem.
If not, then I have no idea.
**UPDATE:**
Okay, so I posted the above reply very shortly after it was mentioned that the Plat was new, so that throws that theory out.
What I CAN tell you is that, at work, we have an old old old Palm Pilot demo unit (512K RAM, I believe). This demo does NOT have the standard launcher that we all know and love, this demo has that funky non-launcher-launcher that you described and that I've seen before). So it IS part of the Palm OS, just an old one.

yeah, this is most definately an old remnant of some way back launcher. I saw this rarely in my other Visor's but usually something bad had to happen, for it to appear, and then it would go away after I taped the Application launcher icon.
Its weird, but it won't go away.
Well looks like time for a call to HS support.
This has been discussed here before. You are correct, it is a remnant of an old PalmOS launcher. Unfortunately I don't remember how to resolve the issue. However if you do a search you may find where it was discussed.
Update: I did a search and found that any discussion of this problem does seem to be related to 3rd party launchers. So they don't appear to be relevant to your situation. However, check out this thread. In that thread, ProjectZero describes an application that will re-make the 3.x launcher the default launcher. Sounds like it might be worth a try.

yeah, turns out that I had a very old archive still on my PC...so when I did my first sync, it restored some obviously junky stuff that caused the old menu to appear. I ran the deactivate, and all is well now. Funny that going from an Edge back to a Platinum would cause this, but I did run SilverScreen on the Edge and not on the Platinum, which must have caused this error...thanks to all for their help!

oh yeah, I had Silver Screen demo installed for a while. My batteries went dead, and I lost everything. I hot sync'd, and recovered my data, but had to reinstall apps such as 4Tnox, so I assumed all my 3rd party software was gone... How do I get back to my original launcher now ? If I do a hard reset now, when I hot sync, won't I end up with the same problem ?
Thanks in advance !

My wife's VDX had this issue. She accidently restored my data onto hers with the backup mod (YIKES!!). So we hard-reset and then synched. It loaded the preferences from Launcher III, but not Launcher III! Deleting the preferences after a warm-reset didn't fix the problem. What did was reloading Launcher III and soft-resetting. I would guess that reloading any third party launcher would fix the problem, as they're designed to take precedence over the standard "launcher call"

OK, I re-installed Silver Screen. When I attempted to activate it, it complained that my 30 day trial had expired. So I deleted it, and there was much rejoicing !
