-- Serial connector for wireless web (SprintPCS) (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=83)
Another thread mentioned that the Visor has both USB and serial on the device itself. My question goes a little further -- can you connect a serial cable of any kind directly to the Visor (without the cradle) for use with SpintPCS's wireless web? My Palm Professional has a travel cable that basically plugs into the bottom of the device and results in a serial connector. I've read on the net that a number of people have been able to use a gender changer in conjunction with the serial data cable from their PCS phones to get net connectivity (the phone acts as an external modem). Anyone know if this will work with a Visor? The core issue is, can I get straight serial out of the device?
As far as I know, yes. The Visor is supposed to have seperate leads for serial I/O and USB I/O. (or perhaps it configures leads based on voltages) At any rate, it should be fairly trivial to whip up a light travel cable as opposed to a bulkier cradle.
I just called Handspring, and they will be making a travel cable for USB, but not for serial, which means that the only way I'm going to get it hooked up to my PCS Phone is through the serial cradle (too bulky). While it might be possible to make one, I must admit I'm a bit disappointed. Does anyone have details on the cellular springboard (price, service, etc.)?
I was going to go for a Palm VII, but with Sprint's wireless web, you get more functionality for a much lower price. You just need a serial port...
Here's an idea for a springboard...how about a springboard that allows you to connect cables and devices designed for a traditional Palm device? It could have a serial connector at the top that allows you to connect the synch cable and/or other devices like the traditional Palm Modem (for those of you that don't want to spend another $130).
Maybe you could even plug in your Visor to a standard Palm cradle...only upside down!
This could be a great product to help all the current Palm users that want to migrate to the Visor but don't want to lose functionality or their investment in add-on devices.
Hey, if anyone makes this product, I want a couple of free units as compensation ;-)
