- How To / Troubleshooting (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/forumdisplay.php?forumid=2)
-- incredible syncing weirdness (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=3083)
so i had a nasty hard reset issue a couple of days ago, restored from the module, then realized the module was about 2 weeks out of date, so restored from the desktop (macos8.5, palmdesktop/hotsync manager 2.1) and everything seemed cool... but i just noticed that all of my to-dos and meetings, except for this week are wiped out. they're on the desktop, and i have tried setting the conduits to "macintosh overwrites handheld" and no dice. its all there on the desktop... but, come on, where is it on the visor? i'm afraid to do a regular sync, because i don't want to wipe out all the data on the desktop, too.
this has never happened to me before (always an adventure!)
thoughts?

addition!!!
incredibly facile response from HS tech support, so i went to work on it myself, and...
i got it all worked out. the really sad thing is before i had figured out the database corruption (cf: following), i had already backed up to the module to keep things up to date. yeeesh.
anyway...
i ran dbscan (a third party app that checks datebook's database for errors,) and it came up with 400+ corruptions. so, i thought, time to start over. i made a copy of my user folder, and went to work.
after seemingly endless hard resets and restoring from the computer, i finally realized that everything was being re-installed twice -- once from the desktop trying to update the machine after figuring out the user name, and once from me setting it to restore from backup... so, i tried one more time, this time turning off all conduits but install... then again with everything set to the default sync pattern...
and it worked!!!
of course i lost a few databases: thesaurus, tinyviewer, mapopolis, albumtogo, and all of my hacks and da's... but after some tracking down, i found 'em, and it looks like i'm back and better than ever.
lessons learned --
1) don't forget to use that backup module. when i'm at home for long periods of time, i forget about it, and then, BAM! i'm hit with something catastrophic like this, and i end up with a lot more work than i should have.
2) always check the integrity of all of your info when restoring anything from the desktop. part of my problem was that after i thought i had the problem fixed, i backed up to the module, and saved a corrupted db. oof.
3)db scan is an awesome tool. i may never have figured out the whole thing without the clues provided by dbscan. it's free... get it and install it now.
ahhh, the things an obsessive mind can accomplish. yeeesh.
