Huh? $249?
Isn't this the same thing Mapopolis is selling direct from their website for $199? What's up with that?
Posted by lmelamed on 12-11-2003 03:24 AM:
No, it's not the same. The one they sell for $199.99 is the one we have for $189.95 at http://www.dpcomputerstore.com/prod...;dept_id=32-005 which is for the Treo 300 and some other of the previous models.
They don't have the Treo 600 version on their website yet because they are filling committed reseller orders. They will post it for the MSRP of $249.99 shortly.
The older models for $199.99 ($189.95 at our site) will not work with the Treo 600.

That's not what I've been reading online. What I'd like to know is what are the differences. Does it support the 5-way buttons better? What is the justification for the higher price? Is this more than just a name change?
Posted by lmelamed on 12-11-2003 06:07 PM:
I don't know the exact differences. I only know what the manufacturer tells us. They tell us the older version won't work with the Treo 300.
It's a hardware issue. Has something to do with the the Treo 600 having the newer Arm processor as well as other hardware differences.
We'd be happy to sell you the Treo 300 version but it cannot be returned if it doesn't work since Mapoplis is stating in advance it doesn't work with the Treo 600.

I've been reading messages from several users who have gotten it to work with the Treo 600, though it didn't support the 5-way buttons. But, I would be interested in a version that specifically supports the 600. I just wish it wasn't priced more than all of the other models that Mapopolis supports. It still would be nice get some information from the manufacturer about what's different about it. It sounds like a great product.

Any idea if they will release a European version? Or can I use other software with the device?

Hmm...how about some research?
Below is the e-mail I received from Mapopolis.
We do not manufacture anything. Another company,
www.positioningsolutions.com buys our software and distributes it with
physical products like the bundles.
HERE IS THE FULL TREO 600 story. The $199 product is Platinum+GPS for older
TREOs, not the 600.
Thanks for your interest in Mapopolis.
We currently support the Treo 600.
1. OPTION WITHOUT GPS DEVICE
If you want the equivalent of Yahoo Maps (door-to-door driving directions)
on your Treo 600, try the free demo outlined below. When used without a GPS
device, it is the same as the Platinum Map Pack for Palm OS 5 for whichever
you are trying of N. America or W. Europe. This web-based product is
$34.95.
When you purchase a Map Pack you get the right to download any/all maps from
the map data release that is current at the time of purchase for whichever
library (North America or Western Europe) you select. You may download for
one year, but the maps downloaded continue working forever. The benefit of a
Map Pack is that it is more economical for users needing more than 3 maps.
The Platinum Map Packs also includes Major Road Maps: These are skeletal
maps that include the major highways in each state/province/country. They
work in conjunction with the detailed county maps. Load a few maps on
either end along with the Major Road Maps and get long distance door-to-door
routing with minimal RAM requirements.
If you purchase this product now, you may receive a pro-rated credit for
upgrading to the Navigator level if you get a GPS device later (prior to the
end of the 375-day downloading period).

2. OPTIONS WITH GPS DEVICE
WHEN USED WITHOUT THE GPS DEVICE ATTACHED, THESE OPTIONS ARE IDENTICAL TO 1.
ABOVE. I encourage you to try the free demo outlined below -- even without
the GPS device.
The 911-locator chip contained in the Treo 600 is not sufficient for use as
a GPS device for navigational purposes. So, if you desire the full
functionality of an onboard system with Voice Alerts (turn right in 500
feet) and Active Route Guidance (reroutes you if you go off course), you
need to purchase a GPS device.
A. OPTION THAT LETS YOU ALSO USE OUT OF VEHICLE:
iGolf has an SDIO-type GPS that will work with the Treo 600. It fits in the
SDIO slot and allows for walking around with the device. The serial
solution outlined below limits you to in-vehicle use. However, the SDIO GPS
uses up the memory card slot and doesn't provide additional memory capacity.
Given the popularity of this device, we expect an SD GPS with added memory
will be released by some vendor within 6-8 months. That will be more
practical for use with Mapopolis. The iGolf model ships with a SINGLE
REGION CD of Platinum+GPS Mapopolis that could be upgraded to the full
web-based Navigator version upon proof of purchase and if desired. The
Platinum+GPS version included does not work on the Treo 600 as is.
LINK TO PURCHASE: http://www.igolftech.com/sdgps.php
Write to [email protected] for instructions on upgrading limited CD to full
web-based Navigator for Palm OS 5 product.
B. OPTION THAT LIMITS YOU TO IN-VEHICLE USE:
One end of the Y-cable on the serial GPS device plugs into your car lighter,
another end to the Treo 600 serial port. The other end terminates at the
magnetic mouse that can sit on your dashboard or be run out through the
opening between door and car body to sit on outside of car to receive the
clearest signal. This would need to be used with a Navigator Map Pack for
Palm OS 5 for whichever of N. America or W. EU is of interest. N. America
is presently available on CD, W. EU is not.
This is why I prefer/recommend the web-based to CD (unless you have a slow
line for downloading):
* There are convenience links to download zip files by state with all the
state detail and major road maps.
* Web-based Navigator include Canada too but CD is US only.
* Web-based also lets you access lower level maps for your platform.
Enhanced cover Alaska, all of Hawaii (NavTech won't fill out rest for about
6 months - only have Honolulu now) and can be better in REALLY rural areas.
* Web-based gives you chance or restarting 375-day download period pointing
to new data when available with some credit for prior purchase. CD does not
offer that.
* If you also want the $24.95 Place Guide Pack (only covers US business
POIs such as hotels, restaurants), it is only available web-based so you
will be downloading that anyway. This may be replaced with Exit Guides for
US and Canada based on data from Zenrin on the near future.
* You can burn your own CD from web-based and have best of both worlds.

FREE DEMO INSTRUCTIONS:
WHEN USING PALM OS plot a route and the Nav Pane will pop up showing the
next turn. If you tap the nav pane,
the prompt will be spoken. Down on the d-pad advances to the next turn, up
backs up to the last. Center button toggles on/off speech & visual prompts.
This shows you what it would be like if you had a GPS device.
The demo maps are now Navigator for Palm OS 5 so you may see how it works
yourself by doing a free demo (with or without a GPS device). When used
without a GPS device, the functionality and maps are equivalent to the
Platinum level maps.
The free Map Viewer is available on our website under Download App, then
select your device type (Palm OS 5 for the Treo 600). The page with the App
also has instructions.
The new User's Guide for the free 1.x Map Viewer that works with the Treo
600 is here: http://kudzumonthly.com/mapopolis/PalmNavMan.zip
You may download the demo maps by following this procedure:
Downloading Demo Maps
Click the blue Download Maps button on the left side of the screen. Specify
platform if you did not already do it earlier in the session (Palm OS 5).
Select the state or province or country in the appropriate box and click
Show All Maps. Select the individual map you wish to download. Next you
will be taken to a page that shows all the available maps for your
selection. Finally, click the Download Map link in the demo row. Save the
map to your Desktop for synching to your device. Follow the instructions
from the Download App page.
Many people doing the free demo ask these questions so I am including them
here to save the effort:
Map Pack
What is a Map Pack?
When you purchase a Map Pack you get the right to download any/all maps from
the map data release that is current at the time of purchase for whichever
library (North America or Western Europe) for whichever platform (Palm OS
5, Pocket PC, Palm OS 3/4/low RAM 5) you select. You may download for one
year, but the maps downloaded continue working forever. The benefit of a Map
Pack is that it is more economical for users needing more than 3 maps.
Long Distance Routing
If I am driving from one end of the state to a location at the other end, do
I have to load every county on the way in order to have complete directions?
No, if you have a Platinum or higher Map Pack to release 4 or newer map
data, you also have access to the Major Road Maps. These are skeletal maps
that include the major highways in each state/province. They work in
conjunction with the detailed county maps. Load a few maps on either end
along with the
Major Road Maps and get long distance door-to-door routing. You may
download these maps from the
top of the listing of maps for each state/province. They also work across
states/provinces.
Just released for W. Europe. Note that cities are depicted as circles and
counties as squares
on the Major Road Maps. If you get off the highway somewhere and want to
find the nearest
county(ies) just tap the nearest squares to find out the maps to load for
travel in that local area.
You may also use this if you are away from the Internet and need to find out
what county a particular
city is in.
Downloading Maps with a Map Pack
I see the Map Pack I purchased when I click Past Purchases but I don't see
any links to use for downloading?
To use your Map Pack, login to your Mapopolis accout and click the blue
Download Maps button on the left side of the screen. Select the state or
province or country in the appropriate box and click Show All Maps. Select
either the individual map you wish to download or the link at the top of the
list to get the entire state/province/country at once in a zip file. Next
you will be taken to a page that shows all the available maps for your
selection. Those that say Download Map come with your purchase; those that
say Add to Cart do not. Finally, click the Download Map link in the row (map
level) you want. Save the map to your Desktop for synching to your device.
FREE UPDATES NOT INCLUDED. READ BELOW. Place Guides (BUSINESS POIs) are
sep. purchase.
There are no fixed dates/time periods for updates. We process them whenever
NavTech sends them to us. Last year they sent them 3 times. We may be
going to a system of two (2) updates per year.
For each data release, NavTech incorporates misc. corrections collected
through their online Driver Feedback forms at http://update.navtech.com.
Credible reports
are checked by drivers and changes may be made to any maps based on this
information. In addition they focus on so many metro areas for each
release. These are the areas to be added or extensively updated for the
next two data releases:

Please note that map updates are not included free with any map or Map Pack
purchase. This is the relevant text from our website:
The purchase of an online Map Pack or Guide Pack entitles you to download
an unlimited number of maps or guides from the purchased version of data for
free for a period of one year from the date of purchase. Discount pricing is
available for later purchases.
The key is (FROM THE PURCHASED VERSION OF DATA). The reason we can't just
give free
updates is that we have to pay NavTech each time each data release is
accessed. If we gave free updates, we would have a business model that
included our paying NavTech royalties greater than what we charge for the
products.
However, web-based Map Pack holders are presented with a link (under Past
Purchases)
that lets them effectively renew/restart (375 days) their Map Pack with the
newest data when it becomes available. The charge to do so is indicated and
prior to the last 3 months of a Map Pack, it includes a credit for the time
remaining on the current Map Pack.
My personal opinion is that renewing once a year should be good enough. Only
taxi drivers and appraisers of new real estate need to get all the updates
as soon as they are released.

Here is the reply from the manufacturer:
unfortunately, the treo300 can't support the software for the navigator
serial bundle... only the treo 600 can.. the 300 can support the gps unit,
but not the voice nor the auto re-routing... each unit has a specific limit
to the amount of info that can be processed and each has a unique way of
transmitting that information... i hope this is helpful..

Just received the following from Positioning Solutions which markes the Treo 600 GPS bundle kit with the Mapopolis GPS concerning the old Mapopolis Treo GPS:
It has been brought to our attention that the original Treo solution '04' from Mapopolis does not work with the Treo 600 as it is a OS5 only device.
Please also ensure your website indicates the incompatibility going forward.
So they are stating the older version for $199 does not work with the Treo 600.

Has anyone actually test-driven the unit?
Excuse the pun, but I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has purchased the Mapopolis GPS kit for the Treo 600.
How has it performed? I've read about issues with the product, and would appreciate any "real-world" input from a current user of the product.

hi, I am still waiting and waiting and waiting for the igolf unit that I ordered to get here six weeks after the release date and they still have not shipped any. They are very short with info. I have called and emailed a few times. I will post about the unit as soon as it arrives. The nice thing about the igolf unit is that you have no wires or cables and it can be used when walking as well as driving, (walking anywhere a car can go). Take care, Jay

Has anyone tried this unit? What are the pros and cons?
I wish the maps could be run off the SD card, since LA is 5MB. But I guess the ability to move them back and forth is a good thing.
