-- Strange dark dots on Prism display (http://discussion.visorcentral.com/vcforum/showthread.php?threadid=14353)

Angry

Hi all,

I purchased a Visor Prism last week, and so far have had absolutely no problems with it -- until yesterday.

It is very odd, I first noticed a little dark smudge on the bottom of my screen, but it turned out not be a smudge at all and seems to actually be a few pixels that just aren't bright enough. Since it was at the bottom of the screen, and is ONLY visible on all white or very bright colors, it did not bug me that much. But at work tonight, I found another one near the top of the screen that wasn't there ten minutes earlier.

Has anyone else experienced this type of strange problem? If so, is there a simple cure? And what causes this?

Thanks,

Ben

I've had my current Prism since December, and I can't say I've run into the problem you describe. It sounds as though your unit may have some dead or frozen pixels. If you bought it locally (Staples, Best Buy, etc.), bring it back and get a new one under their return policy. It's easier and faster than going through Handspring. If you bought it through Handspring's site, you'll have to call them for an RMA, but they'll overnight another unit to you. (Be sure to specify you want a NEW unit, or you might get a refurb.)

I purchased my Prism from Staples.com about a month ago. When I received it I noticed that I had three bright spots (pixles) that appeared on the screen. I took in the unit to a nearby Staples store showed them my shipping package they exchange my Prism with no problem. Havent had any problems ever since with the Prism.

pixel Tester

When you get your new device, run the free pixeltester from Astraware on it. It says 'for Palm IIIc' all over it, but it works on the Prism. It cycles all the pixels on the screen through a number of colors, making it easy to spot bad or stuck pixels.
Here's a PalmGear link to it.

Hi all,

Actually, I would not say that the pixels are frozen or dead, as they will work. These little dots are only visible on white or very very bright colors, and only if I tilt the screen slightly. As long as more don't appear, I can live with it -- I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this and if there is a quick fix.

I bought it at Best Buy, which turned out to be a really bad mistake. The first two had been returned and were defective, and I finally got one that had not been opened. And that was after being "informed" of their warranty almost nine times and finally being told "the Prism is crap." I should have ordered from Handspring

If I were you I would contact HS b/c for the price you paid you should not have this problem with the screen. As for Best Buy is concerned you would image they would treat their customers better, I've had good experiences with Staples which also has a good selection of HS products. Be persistent and dont give up untill you are satisfied! For all you know they probably put the defective units back in inventory and sell it to the next guy.

Yes, that is exactly what Best Buy did. I did not actually leave the store with the second Prism, as I refused to take another opened one. The third was still sealed, and I'm wondering how serious this really is. Maybe I'll just request a replacement from Handspring and wait it out, I'd rather not deal with Best Buy again. And I really should have gone to Staples, but I was rushing like crazy that day. Hardly an impulse buy, by the way, as I've wanted a Prism since it came out. We'll see.. but for now, I can live with these slightly dark pixels

Pixeltester didn't work on my Prism. When I ran it, it just showed a white screen.

"... just showed a white screen."

Did you tap on the screen? I found that it just sits there until you tap the screen, then the entire screen changes colors.
